Busybox : Using fallback suid method
  • XavierJXavierJ September 2010
    Hello,

I got this message (Busybox : Using fallback suid method) when I login as a user other than root and each time I use a command.
    I'm using a base slitaz without X.
I know this message is show when a user try to use a command of busybox although he doen't has the execute permission.
But here, all my standard commands are in 777 mode and busybox is ok too.

I may have something to do with my passwd file: it has been copied from another system, along with shadow, group and gshadow.

Is there a busybox expert to help me ?

Xavier, 777 is basic permissions (-rwxrwxrwx); SUID, SGID and sticky bit is extended permissions.
    Please, check permissions using command
    ls -l /bin/busybox
    Is it -rwsrwxrwx?
So, you need to reset SUID bit.

Read more about SUID, SGID and sticky bit.

Hi, I guess that not readable would be much more secure for a base utility as busybox, besides managing sticky bit etc ;-)
If you accidentally overwrite busybox contents, you lose your shell, nothing less.

I have set the SUID bit on the busybox file and the problem is fixed, thank you.
(Busybox is not writeable, don't worry :-)

So busybox has to be run as root, and when it can't, it still does but print a message ?

Oh, I'm sorry, Xavier! Really set, not reset. I wrote this from my memory.
Next, this is from my regular SliTaz 3.0:
    tux@slitaz:~$ ls -l /bin/busybox
    -rwsr-xr-x 1 root root 544784 Mar 12 19:26 /bin/busybox
