Slow Wireless manager before installing Intel 3945 driver
  • WilliamWilliam April 2010
    Hi,

I'm currently trying to customize Slitaz for my need.
Launching from a LiveCD 3.0, I could easily connect on internet using my ethernet card to donwload package needed
I noticed than to load my Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network driver, I need to go the Wireless Manager->drivers
When I open WirelessManager, it takes aaaages to open (scanning for Wifi networks?)
    So
1- do you know how to fix this ?
2- will it occurs with a custom LiveCD with needed drivers and configuration ?

    Thanks

    William

Install linux-wireless.tazpkg which has driver/module iwl-3945 for your wireless. Open wifimanager, drivers tab, install the iwl-3945 firmware and load the iwl-3945 module. Add iwl-3945 to /etc/rcS.conf LOAD_MODULES=

Someone else will have to comment with the info on how to add the firmware to the custom iso you make with tazlito.

    Hi,

I already have these package (in 3.0, they are installed)
On tazhw, I saw my intel pro 3945

When i launch wireless manager, I have on slim.log
ifconfig: SIOCSIFFLAGS: Aucun fichier ou dossier de ce type
wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

I also have 2 strange errors on logs/messages
wireless manager becomes active just after the last one
    (will post them if needed)

william: recharge and upgrade your sytem. intel pro 3945 is supposed to be supported out-of-the-box but liveCD was missing the firmware files. bug is fixed now.

    Hi,
where is the latest LiveCD3.0 ? from the mirror, I see a March version when I downloaded mine 25th April so it seems I'm upto date

you were right, I needed to install firmware
    2010-04-27 21:08:24 - Installed - iwlwifi-3945-firmware (15.32.2.9) - dc4188cfbaca52415e21cc1d83aba9b6

    What I don't understand it
1/ why it seems it correctly loaded on log?
    ex on /var/log/boot.log
    Detecting PCI devices Kernel modules...
    * Loaded module: snd_hda_intel
    * Loaded module: iwl3945

    on /var/log/message

2/why is it to hard to get to the "Drivers" tab on "Wireless Manager", to install the firmare ?
It took me 3 minutes (!) to open WirelessManager
then, I select iwl3945 as module (Load)
then I select iwl3945 as firmware (install)
and everything works like a charm...
I only noticed these lines on var/log/message
    pr 27 18:59:09 (none) user.info kernel: iwl3945 0000:03:00.0: firmware: requesting iwlwifi-3945-2.ucode

    Apr 27 19:01:30 (none) user.info kernel: iwl3945 0000:03:00.0: firmware: requesting iwlwifi-3945-2.ucode
so it seems it loops to the end for 3minutes trying to connect to the firmware...which is not there ?

The firmware must be installed before the module is loaded.

jozee's bug fix is only him saying yes there is a bug, the module is loading and the firmware is not on the iso,it may be fixed in the next cooking release iso. There is no slitaz-3.0.iso available that doesn't have this problem.

    Bootup

    Open xterm

Become root: su password is root

    Unload the module
    root@slitaz: modprobe -r iwlwifi-3945

    Verify it's not loaded
    lsmod

Open wifimanager, drivers tab, install the iwl-3945 firmware.

    Load the iwl-3945 module.

mojo, william : yes, we haven't released a stable maintenance release. SliTaz has rolling release functionality built-in, so you can do "tazpkg recharge && tazpkg upgrade". You can always just do what mojo suggested from gui for installing firmware or if you use cli, type:
     get-iwlwifi-3945-firmware

For more wifi help, you must read the guides documentation.
