Nvidia 8600M GS unrecognized by non-free nvidia driver ?
  • WilliamWilliam April 2010
    Hi,

    I have an Asus F3Sv with a GForce 8600M GS 256M.
It's too slow for Android development under Vista, so I'm trying under Slitaz

Unfortunatly, everytime I try to launch the Android Emulator from Eclipse, I got a "X connection to broken :0.0 (explicit kill or server shutdown)" error
You could say it's an Eclipse/ADT bug, but I need to be sure (I really hope it's not! Slitaz is so fast on my laptop!)
From what I need all over the net, this error occurs when no X Server is found.

My first try was with a raw 3.0, initial driver ==> same error
Then I added Xorg + vesa ==> same error
Then I tried with Xorg + nv ==> same error (but better resolution and 2nd monitor clone handled!)
Then I tried with non-free nvidia driver==> unable to install it

I noticed several problem so perhaps fixing one of them will fix them all
1/ after install throught Tazhw box, I have a "Xlib : extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0" (uhoh! :0.0 like in Eclipse) + Error : couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig....of course nvidai X Server config complains "you doesn't appear to use Nvidia X driver"
glxinfo gives the same errors about GLX

2/ if I try to launch with this xorg.conf, I came back to terminal with a "NVIDIA not found" error

    3/ if I edit xorg.conf, I have
    Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "unknown vendor"
    BoardName "unknown board"
    endsection
I see some people on the net with the correct value for this 8600M GS card...so what ?

4/ I followed advice on the wiki and fixed the dri path, added the missing modes, etc....still nothing....

it really seems it doesn't detect my card....while nv "sees" it...

any hint, test to do ?

    Thanks

    William

I think your card may not be supported by the new nvidia drivers. May like to check on nvidia for correct drivers http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us

Support for older nvidia cards is now in wok-undigest. I have uploaded nvidia-173xx and nvidia-96xx at : http://people.slitaz.org/~jozee/packages/

    Hi,

    thanks for the reply
on the nvidia link, and on http://www.nvidia.com/Download/Find.aspx?lang=en-us
I don't find driver for the 8600M GS
They have for the 8600M GT and for the 8800M GS but not the 8600M GS
    what the... ?!
I was able to find an old one :
    http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_display_ia32_185.18.31_old.html

but it's because the newest have another way to list the supported devices.. ?
    mine ins 0x0425 (from http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_18897.html)

so what should I download ?!
one of your packages (which one?) ?

for more info, here is what I have in the Xorg.log

    for nv:
II) Primary Device is: PCI 01@00:00:0
(--) NV: Found NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GS at 01@00:00:0
==> so it's the correct card, juste strange it's not added on xorg.cong

    for nvidia --nonfree
    II) LoadModule: "nvidia"
    (II) Loading /usr/lib/X11/modules/drivers//nvidia_drv.so
    (II) Module nvidia: vendor="NVIDIA Corporation"
    compiled for 4.0.2, module version = 1.0.0
    Module class: X.Org Video Driver
(EE) NVIDIA: Failed to load the NVIDIA kernel module. Please check your
(EE) NVIDIA: system's kernel log for additional error messages.
    (II) UnloadModule: "nvidia"
    (II) Unloading /usr/lib/X11/modules/drivers//nvidia_drv.so
(EE) Failed to load module "nvidia" (module-specific error, 0)
    + also visible :
    insmod : cannot insert /lib/modules/2.6.30.6-slitaz/kernel/drivers/video/nvidia.ko.gz

I was unable to untar nvidia.ko.gz...invalid gzip magic

Me too - nVidia 7600 Go - been struggling with drivers
  • flymoflymo July 2010
...and now the problem has gone away! Do not know what I did that was different, but now we have nVidia installed and running with faster video manipulation etc. Working well.
So I attempted our Acer REVO with the ION chipset, (nVidia 9400 + Atom 330) and that is now working fine! Boots fast, too.
Thanks to the devs at SliTaz!
