Complete beginner needs help to start Slitaz on a Mini 311c

My original thread in french remains unanswered :

Here is my english call for help :

    Good afternoon !

I have been a Macuser for a long time.
    I never used Linux.
But I heard about Slitaz and saw it loaded on a friend's PC.
I liked its lightness and efficiency a lot.

I tried to make a LiveUSB for my PC (a HP/Compaq Mini 311c) from Windows XP using this guide :
    http://www.slitaz.org/fr/doc/handbook/liveusb.html#windows
(sorry, no english version available for this guide AFAIK).
The ISO I used is the cooking 20100314.

I think, this step worked OK.

    Here is my situation :
I start the PC in BIOS mode, pick the USB flash disk option and hit < CR >
Then I get the Slitaz "Boot baby boot" "Splash image" and a "boot:" prompt.

    I tried to
    - just hit < CR >
    - write "slitaz irqpoll" and hit < CR >
    - write "slitaz sound=no" and hit < CR >
    - write "slitaz screen=text sound=no home=USB irqpoll" and hit < CR >

No matter what I just typed, I always have the same result :
the booting process goes on until it displays several lines with a yellow [ OK ] and blocks right after displaying "* Loaded module: snd_hda_intel"

By the way, a Mini 311c does NOT have an Intel audio, but a nVidia.

I am stuck there waiting for your help ! :)

    Have a nice day !

    Cobus.

    Hi Cobus

There's some guides (in English): http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/handbook/liveusb.html
    and here: http://hg.slitaz.org/tazusb/raw-file/tip/doc/tazusb.en.html

I think the guide in French was written a long time ago before tazusb came along.

    Paul

PS: make sure you 'tazpkg recharge' and 'tazpkg upgrade' first as there's an updated version of tazusb in the repos.

    Hi Linea,

    Thank you for answering.
As far as I understand things, tazusb is a Linux tool.
My PC is still Windows (XP) only.
I won't be able to use tazusb before my Slitaz accepts to complete its boot. :-(

By the way, the first link you provided has a link to the tazusb manual :
    http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/manuals/tazusb.en.html
but it is broken (error 404).
As of today, the right link is :
    http://hg.slitaz.org/tazusb/raw-file/tip/doc/tazusb.en.html

    Again, thank you.

    Have a nice evening !

    Cobus.

I do not remember which version gave me a similar problem of seeming to ignore sound instructions.

Did the boot complete with the wrong sound setting or did the boot fail to complete?
  • CobusCobus March 2010
The boot failed to complete every time.
It always hangs after displaying "* Loaded module: snd_hda_intel"

I tried new boot options :
    "boot: slitaz sound=noconf"
    "boot: slitaz screen=1366x768x24"

but the result was the same.

    Screen resolution did not change.
Everything is as if slitaz did not take my boot parameters into account.

Thank you for your help, slicel ! :-)

    Hi Cobus,
I highly think that you should, as a beginner and as you have specific configuration, consider to use a stable version of SliTaz Live CD first...
I cannot swear that it will solve any problem but this kind of basement is more suitable to begin using SliTaz, it is just common sense. ;-)

Thanks for your advice, Babaorum !

My computer is based on the nVidia ION platform that was released in the early summer of 2009. The stable version is older (April 2009).

Do you think, the stable version will be able to handle my hardware in spite of that ?

    Again, thanks !

    Cobus.

    Hi !

    Guess what ?
    You were right, Babaorum !

I sat up another USB jump drive with Slitaz Stable 2.0
It booted OK. I now have a graphical desktop with mouse pointer and all. :-)
I have not used anything yet, but am very happy to report a boot-ability of Slitaz 2.0 on the ION platform.
Thank you all for your help, especially Babaorum ! :-)

Now if my boot problems with the 20100314 cooking can help track (and sort out ?) bugs for the coming version 3.0, I can beta test if you wish.

    Have a nice evening !

    Cobus.

    Hello !

"acpi=ht" boot parameter solved my boot problems with the cooking 20100314 and stable 3.0 versions.
But with both these versions, the "screen=1366x768x24" boot parameter is ignored, and the "Start" button in the Static IP configuration of Netbox Manager remains inactive.
I guess, this has something to do with "acpi=ht".

    Have a nice day !

    Cobus.
