root (hd1.0) error 21 disk not exist
  • FrancisFrancis February 2010
Hi. Im new to linux and i have created my partition for slitaz 2.0 and windows 2000 pro

    I have given windows 2000 pro = 5gb hard drive /dev/hda2
and the reset for slitaz /dev/hda1
Theres only 1 13gb hard drive in the system. (i know is not much as is only for my parents as they browse the internet)

    Screenshot from the partitioner

Slitaz partitions and installs ok to /dev/hda1 and installed GRUB to /dev/hda okay but when i come to boot it says

    root (hd1.0)
    error 21 disk not exist

I have tryed going into grub into the boot folder and renaming hd0.1 in the file to see if that helps but it not letting me edit the file, permission denied

    Hope you can help.

Try to edit your grub menu.lst like this:
    open terminal type su
    enter your pass
    then type
    pcmanfm
    go to your /boot/grub directory
right click menu.lst choose open with leafpad
now you can edit the file
disk not exist - is it because you have a period?. Should be a comma.
    Like this
    (hd1,0)
but i'm guessing it might even be (hd0,1)

Yeah I was thinking it was (hd0,1) but it wasn't letting me edit the file but Ill give it a go now

Edited the file into (hd0.1) but im getting a message,

Error 17 cant mount selected partition

Francis if slitaz is on hda1 it should be (hd0,0) and Windows is on (hd0,1)

Can't see any edit button and wanted to add this:
    sda1 or hda1 (hd0,0)
    sda2 or hda2 (hd0,1)
    sda3 or hda3 (hd0,2)

It goes like that so on and so forth. If its a second hard drive then the first number gets changed in the sequence, (hd1,0).

    sda1 is sata
    hda1 is ide

But i have only got 1 ide hard drive in my system.

    EDITED:

    Yeah it was (hd0.0)

Thanks, Now i can enjoy slitaz

    Hello guys!

Thanks for your help. I had same situation with my Slitaz distro yesterday.
@time4meds's instruction worked out for me. I changed (hd1,0) for (hd0,0) and now it booting fine.
