mc-4.7.0.tazpkg is broken when used via SSH
  • darkaudaxdarkaudax January 2010
    Hello,

mc-4.7.0.tazpkg was installed via "tazpkg upgrade" on the latest cooking version. Midnight Commander works correctly on the console of the laptop. However, mc now fails when used via SSH. The bar showing the location on the screen is not displayed and you get the following error message: "(mc:1981): GLib-CRITICAL **: g_array_free: assertion `array' failed".

You can correct the problem by reinstalling mc-4.6.1.tazpkg

Any thoughts and/or solutions are welcomed.

    Hello,

    Yes i reproduce.
I have updated to 4.7.0.1 and fix some wrong path.
Hope that will be good for you. Will be soon on the mirror.

    Erjo,

Thanks very much. v4.7.0.1 did eliminate the GLib-CRITICAL error. Unfortunately the highlighting of the screen position is still broken. What I mean by this is that as you use the cursor to move over a file name, it should be a black bar with the file/directory name in white. As well, the bottom menu items should be black bars with white writing. See http://imagebin.ca/view/euZMeA6.html for an example of how it should look.

To have it work correctly, I revert back to mc-4.6.1.tazpkg.

    Erjo,

Yes, that looks correct. That appears to be on a console screen which also does work for me. It is only broken via SSH connections.

Let me try a colour TTY via SSH and see if it works. I will report back later since I don't have my netbook with me.

    Erjo,

I tried a colour TTY emulation via SSH and it does work correctly like you posted above. It seems that the black and white emulation is broken in v4.7.0.1. The line that the cursor is over is not reverse with white characters and black background. (See my link above with a v4.6 version screenshot showing how it looks when working.) I don't know what changed from v4.6 to v4.7 but the black and white version is now broken.

My preference is still the black and white version. So if you have no solution, I can certainly live with using the colour TTY emulation. Thanks very much for your efforts on the project and getting back to me on this particular issue. It is appreciated.

    Hi,

    ok.

I found that you can run mc with -b to disable colors.

Or you can customise your color scheme by editing ~/.mc/ini file.

    Erjo,

Thanks for the info. Again, I don't have my netbook with me. I will experiment later and post my results later so other people can benefit as well.

    Erjo,

Historically I used a vt102 terminal emulation with MC versions up to and including v4.6. This worked perfectly.

Starting with MC v4.7, it only works correctly when I use xterm terminal emulation. Your mc -b works perfectly with xterm as well.

So I don't know what the midnight commander developers changed between v4.6 and v4.7 but they broke vt102 terminal emulation. I suspect the root problem is with MC, not Slitaz.

    Again, thanks for your help.
