Blank screen with cursor on startup
  • TharwenTharwen March 2011
    Dear all,

I installed flash and reinstalled Midori using the package manager, then when nothing seemed to change, I tried to restart. Unfortunately, while I could click all of the applications and shortcuts on the screen, none of them did anything. I eventually restarted the laptop by removing the power. When it came back on, I got through the login screen fine, only to be greeted by a completely black screen with just my mouse cursor on it.

I can right click on the screen and it shows the normal right-click menu for the desktop but none of the links work except terminal (under 'Favourite applications'). Also, 'Activate Composite' turns the screen grey.

So... any ideas on how to fix this?

You could start over, re-install the os, and then try this.

I can't reinstall right now, since I don't have the disk with me. Also, the post in that link doesn't really make much sense to me...

Is there nothing else I can do?

Enter su in terminal and then the root password (the password is root, unless you changed it).

You could enter tazx in terminal and hope that re-setting your video will fix it.

You could enter lxpanel in terminal and hope the taskbar appears.

You could try a usb mouse if you were using a touchpad.

If you have terminal and an internet connection on the computer, there are many things to try but they are often complicated and might not work.
