Slitaz + Nvidia + 1680x1050 [SOLVED]
  • cpcnwcpcnw October 2009
    Hi cpcnw

I can probably lend a hand: I wrote the original forum/wiki stuff for the Nvidia drivers.

But first we need some instructions on building a custom kernel:

@pascal - Are you OK to do this?

@pankso - Any chance of a 'temporary' wiki page to post this kind of stuff.

    HI All,

Has anyone had success at this?

I have tried every permutation of /etc/X11/xorg.conf settings that I can find on thr web and still cannot get above 1280x1024

Appreciate any offering / suggestions - thanks

ps WIll the articles from previous forum be restored - kind of miss some of the info !!!

Does xorg.conf actually do anything? I thought SliTaz uses XVesa. Can you find a command to force whichever one to change res.?

Can anyone post the chain of commands to run to get xorg installed + nvidia ?

Had to do a re-install of Taz and now the old forum has gone cant remember how to do it ???

Also, is it not possible to get this forum into 'categories' ??

seawolf - have followed doco on getting Xorg installed and that has worked. The pieces I am missing are from a forum post about getting the nvidia driver loaded.

My /etc/X11/xorg.conf contains the following specs from the monitor manufacturer [Samsun Syncmaster 2243nw]

    HorizSync 31-81
    VertRefresh 56-75
    Modeline "1680x1050@60" 154.20 1680 1712 2296 2328 1050 1071 1081 1103

    Depth 24
    Modes "1680x1050"

Taken from the screen and monitor section. I used the online modeline generator to calculate the modeline however the LCD panel bios complains about incorrect / inoptimal refresh and the screen is very fuzzy on fonts even though it does actually fill the entire screen?

Seems like the stock nv driver has issues with the gfx bios. Reports are it [1680x1050] works with the closed [nvidia] driver.

Problems is, that forum post is now gone, so I am either in for some fun trying to get it installed by myself or maybe someone who knows can help?

    Linea, I installed top 3 pkgs from typing 'nvidia' search in pkg manager then edited xorg.conf from 'nv' to 'nvidia' and got the splash screen so think that driver side of things is now ok. However, trying to get something [anything] close to a correct res is proving extremely difficult. I have tried various xorg.conf additions to no avail including ;

    Device Section
    #Option "ModeValidation" "NoMaxPClkCheck"

    Screen Section
    #Option "metamodes" "1680x1050_60 +0+0"
    #Option "UseEDIDDpi" "false"
    #Option "UseEDIDFreqs" "false"
    #Virtual 1680 1050

Ironically I really wanted to buy a 1600x1200 standard aspect ratio panel but couldnt find one anywhere at a decent price [UK] Now I feel that this 16:10 aspect is more trouble than worth!!!

Seems that the Modeline Generator here :-

was giving me a wild goose chase. I tried 'gtf' at the cli as well as pressing 'auto' on the LCD and its now synced in.

I now have to illiminate about a dozen options from xorg.conf that I have inserted as suggested by various web pages
as I always like to keep record of the minimum working config. Will post here when done (and keep my own copy this time in case this forum gets changed!)

Out of interest, is there any cross platform procedure for deriving correct modeline timings? I was just thinking as that 'other os' seems to get it right without 'doing anything' - how I can find out the exact parameters that it runs in?

    Hi cpcnw

I think a lot of the Debian based distros use the dexconf tool:
    to generate the xorg.conf file.

The Modeline generator is based the older XFree86 specification, so it may not work on Xorg.

You can try building the nvidia driver yourself (this will also rewrite the xorg.conf):

    1. # tazpkg get-install linux-source

    2. Download the driver from the nvidia page:

    3. ./NVIDIA*.run --kernel-source-path=/usr/src/linux
(you may need to chmod +x first)

    4. If it builds OK, you can then: modprobe nvidia

    Linea, I tried this also ;

but the modeline created by gtf where closest. One thing the above did alert me to though was panel dimesnions in mm. I didnt know about that, but now when I look in the xorg log I can see that a caculation is done based on that info so I will be leaving it in :)

This is interesting. The modeline created by cvt matches XP monitor config.

I also used the reduced blanking mode as recommended for LCD panels.

Finally I am getting a good display. Just need to figure out fonts in OB and Im a happy man !!!
