Plus: I want to check whether it is essential or meaningful to do this without a busy home directory as this would be, conceptwise, contraproductive in case one wants to give away that improved rootfs-file to friends.

Thanks Mojo for your advice re: wacom in the kernel! There was some other bizarre problem, which might have something to do with the way the kernel serial module was compiled (I tried to change the kernel compile settings, but it managed to create an unbootable kernel! ouch!) might have to wait for the next stable release...
