modprobe uvcvideo, followed by trying to start skype, causes a crash. Output from /var/log/messages is below. Is this addressable or do I just have to wait for newer versions of V4L stack?:

strange? You don't need v4l stack for uvcvideo anymore as uvcvideo is in kernel. Sometime back I pushed those changes to linux-video but I realized its not there anymore. There has been many changes to slitaz kernel since then and I think somebody overwrote that accidently. We will look into it.
