sound and network problems
  • dbickindbickin December 2010
About a year ago, I first heard about Slitaz, it was at 2.0 and I liked what I saw but decided it wasn't time to install it. In the meantime, 3.0 came along and now cooking 20101104. I am ready to install it now, but I find that while everything worked in 2.0, in 3.0 I no longer had sound. In the latest cooking, I have no sound and no internet access.

I read other threads on no sound, but they were mostly centered on the last cooking version. (I gather that 3.0 was supposed to have fixed the problem.)

My audio is: 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
and soundconf appears to find it and reports no errors, but still no sound.

Not sure what info is pertinent to diagnose the network problem, this is the first time I've ever had troubles with a distro not being able to connect.

At this point, should I jump in and try to get cooking working, or should I concentrate on getting 3.0 to work?
And what should I do to try to get sound and/or network to work?

    Any advice/help appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

Info to diagnose network problem http://doc.slitaz.org/en:handbook:networkconf#install-network-card-driver
For sound try alsamixer and m key on Master and PCM http://doc.slitaz.org/en:handbook:multimedia
Only links to handbook, but sometimes handbook is more clear then forum threads.
My personal opinion is that cooking has more packages, but is very unstable at the moment. More for development, then everyday use. If you like to hack in code take cooking if not stable.

Still no joy. Under 3.0, the alsamixer is showing 100% volume on master and PCM, but no sound is coming out of the speakers. Under 2.0, I get sound. What else can I try?
  • GawronGawron December 2010
Alsamixer may show 100% and be muted with m key. Under the volume bar is MM or 00 it must be 00. Sorry I’m only beginner, maybe other more advanced users may help you more. As for network ifconfig from su account gives useful info. If you can see eth interface its quite good and hardware works well remains only connection with dhcp or static ip.

It is 00. Hopefully someone else can chime in. 3.0 doesn't have the network problem so I am not following up with that. Thanks for your help.

there is amixer - it can be that there are numids switched off in 3.0 - see:

It looks like it is saying the 'Speaker Playback Switch' is turned off. Is that so? And if so, how do I fix it?

sorry I gave you the wrong link - you should compare your output with 2.0 - the rest is described here:
