Unable to get Broadcom 4311 working with SliTaz
  • JonCJonC December 2009
Moving thread from mailing-list to forum, per request from Rohit.

I've been unable to get my BCM4311 working under SliTaz cooking-20091124. I updated it with the for tazpkg install of three packages from ~jozee (linux-2.6.30.6.tazpkg, linux-wireless-2.6.30.6.tazpkg, and the broadcom-wl-.10.91.9.3_2.6.30.6.tazpkg). I did a "tazusb writefs" after that to write the updated root to the USB drive. The behavior is still the same. wl loads fine but no wireless device shows up in dmesg (other than the module load), iwconfig, or ifconfig.

Did I get the packages from the wrong location?

Here's the output I'm seeing from iwconfig/ifconfig/lspci/dmesg. Is here anything else that would help to diagnose?

    Thanks,

    Jon

Doh. I meant cooking-20091104, of course...

Sorry JonC, I used my admin rights to format your post so that everyone can read it. Hope its fine with you.

Ok, your situation is bit tricky as your eth0 card is Broadcom 44xx which I think needs ssb which needs to be blacklisted for "wl" drivers. I am guessing eth0 card is creating some problem.

Can you try "ifconfig eth0 down" and then "ifconfig wlan0 up"?

Also, try ndiswrapper (instead of wl) and see if that works. If it doesn't, it has to be an "ssb" problem.

JonC - perhaps it is possible for you to download fluxflux-sl - its a full distro, but in the basics very near to slitaz - BCM4311 is there supported out of the box - so it could be very helpful to compare - for me it was very helpful with the umts stuff

  • jozeejozee December 2009
@kultex: BCM4311 is also supported in slitaz. I have BCM4328, which also needs the BCM4311 driver to work. The overall module size is only few KB but we cannot distribute it with Slitaz because of the copyright problem (non-free license). This problem is very specific to latest Cooking release. That's why I want JonC to first get ndiswrapper working so that we can rule out "ssb" interference.

But yes, everything working out of box is great.

@jozee: I not only don't mind your reformatting, I much appreciate it! it's much easier to read now...

I really could use some help with the ndiswrapper stuff. As a total newbie, I'm not sure what I'm doing.

Is it just copy the .sys file and .inf file from a windows install to my thumb drive, (mounted on /home), then

    cd /home; ndiswrapper –i filename.inf

    Am I missing anything?

    Thanks!
