Something keeps drawing me back to Slitaz... This time I am setting up an old desktop (semperon 2 ghz). I started with 3.0 stable but again I am somewhat forced to move to cooking so I can get the newer VLC. When I moved to cooking something in pcmanfm broke; it is not rendering fonts or icons (completely unusable). I tried to just up grade VLC but it doesn't work and brakes just about everything.
So... paging Dr. Jozee... any ideas how to just upgrade VLC? I will download the latest cooking and try again from the beginning and go from there.
I really like the idea of tweeking Slitaz until I have it setup just how I like it then always start it from that static state.
. if it works you are done, if it fails you must check the error, it probably will fail because of some library being too old, so you should build that library too. if you fall in a dependency hell you must upgrade to cooking :-)
i've done it, it's a little bit tricky but it can be done. i've done it to practice with tazwok and dependency, but before to give you packages i need to rebuild all in a chroot environment and to know your locale, i usually build packages in italian language and i think it would not be too useful to you.
ok, to build vlc 1.1.4 in slitaz 3.0 you need to upgrade Qt4 libs to at least 4.5.1, you need ffmpeg 0.5.1 and edit the receipts with some missing build depends from the slitaz repo and removing some patch. you can download the files from here and extract them in a folder to use as an undigest repo: http://hg.slitaz.org/tazpkg/raw-file/tip/doc/tazpkg.en.html look for setup-undigest. after that you can cross your fingers and try
tazpkg recharge tazpkg upgrade
. if you see vlc in the upgradeable packages you could try to upgrade, if you can't see it recheck tazpkg manual. i'm not responsible for what happens to your system :-) you can download packages from here: http://hotfile.com/dl/77259625/20ec03d/undigest.tar.bz2.html
thanks for the help! i have been away from the computer for a few days but i will start digging in soon.
i do understand the underlying nature of linux-i do tend to break things often but i always learn something from it.
slitaz is a great medium for learn since it is so small starting over doesnt take very long. also, its great to have a stable gzip to revert back to. a small 1g stick has plenty of room on it to play with..
