To start mysql server you can run :

    /etc/init.d/mysql start

Or add mysql to RUN_DAEMONS in /etc/rcS.conf

Like mojo pointed out, many of the daemons in SliTaz that you can add don't get started by default. You must manually add them to /etc/rcS.conf or add them to the Run daemons box under the Initialization tab of the Control Box. It's normally recommended to make sure slim is always last on the list, while dbus and hald must be started first. So anywhere between them should be fine.
