LiveCD video problems, possibility of slipstreaming packages?
  • rubendebliekrubendebliek September 2010
The last couple of days I have tried various methods to run Slitaz on an older desktop that I want to install for a Python based digital signage solution that is currently running on Windows XP. The target system is an old Compaq Ipaq Desktop with a 1ghz Intel P3, 128mb sdram built on the Intel 82810 mainboard (a small form factor pc with low power consumption, even for modern standards [normally around 50watts]). Currently these desktops, of which I have around 30, are all equiped with XP, but due to various reasons I want to convert them to Linux.

I had some fairly random luck with the differently flavored livecd environments. Firsly, the Slitaz 3.0 would only run on 1 of my alternate desktop machines (an AMD XP 2400 with 2gb memory and ATI Radeon 9xxx), the Slitaz Xvesa would only run on my office notebook (Intel P. T2390, 3gb memory and Intel 965 video). For the target machine, the Slitaz 3.0 Xorg would result in a RGB line mashup on the screen (as described in other posts on the forum), although I could boot into the text version and perform terminal commands. The Xvesa version ended up in a blank screen in all but the 640x480x16 resolution, which gave me the Slitaz login screen, after which it still prompted to a blanked screen.

Due to some “restrictions” in my digital signage setup, I need to have X running, as I intend to use the target machine on a 5:3 1280x768x24 resolution (which currently is being displayed fairly adequate in Windows XP, a point I make just to stress that the videocard is capable of running this resolution). Having read some posts about the Xorg Slitaz version not being equiped with some necessary packages for Intel video cards, I lastly tried to install these packages as to try to get my target machine to run Slitaz. I have tried the steps laid out in:

    http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/1564/live-cd-hangs-at-slim-login-manager-probably

unfortunately, to no avail. I have also installed Slitaz 3.0 Xorg to my alternate desktop machine, installed the packages for Intel video cards, cooked a Livecd, but without any luck: this resulted in a kernel panic due to a faulty mounting (which is probably unrelated to my video problem). However, at this point I was already frustrated too much to commence another attempt at getting slitaz to run on my target machine.

I really want to love this distro as it seems to tick all the boxes for me (extremely lightweight, ubuntu derivative, simple gui), but I cannot seem to get beyond this video problem. Furthermore, I know it should work as I allready had the latest Puppy Linux running on my target machine (I just found this distro to be too complex for my specific purpose). Intuitively I feel that I just need a Slitaz 3.0 Xorg version with the xorg-xf86-video-intel (plus the packages it in turn is dependent off) to make my target machine run. My question: is there a way to cook a slitaz 3.0 Xorg version that includes these packages, preferably outside of a Slitaz environment? For instance, is it possible to slipstream certain packages into the Slitaz 3.0 iso offered in the download section, as is possible with most versions of Windows? If not, what would be my best approach towards getting my target machine to run? Cook a stable Livecd version with the packages inside (how?); install manually onto the hd and edit Xorg (I'm not a novice in Linux, neither am I an expert: if I can do it in Gui I prefer it above the commandline, although I know sometimes using the terminal is unavoidable)?

    Any help is appreciated!

Maybe try using the online builder @ http://pizza.slitaz.org/

It should be able to add packages to a downloadable ISO for you (I haven't tried it yet, but from what I hear, it's possible).

For intel video cards, take a look at this guide:
    http://doc.slitaz.org/en:guides:xorg-xvesa
mainly the dri/drm and intel sections.

I have found an alternative way to make things work! I have made an USB install on the desktop machine that would boot into the liveCD, updated that with the suggested packages from the earlier quoted thread

    http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/1564/live-cd-hangs-at-slim-login-manager-probably

After loading this USB pendrive up on my target machine, and with some tweaking of my xorg.conf (most notably adding "intel_agp" to the module load list, and setting up a correct resolution for my screen) all is working well-ish now. The Intel_AGP module is correctly loaded upon startup (tazhw detect-pci correctly shows the module whenever I boot up in textmode to verify this), and I am guided towards the Slim login manager. The only peculiar thing that is left is the following: whenever X has loaded and Slim is being started, I am left with the commandline login ("Welcome to your slitaz box" etc.) . If I then wait for approximately 5-10 seconds, the gui from Slim mysteriously (or not?) takes over, and I am presented with the Slitaz login screen. If I recall correctly, this did not occur on my alternative desktop machine, which would just proceed to the Slitaz login screen after the "HAL" initialization. Maybe some food for thought.

Anyhow, I will be testing and benchmarking Slitaz this weekend. Glad it would finally work for me!
