No matter what url I try, MPlayer fails to play video streams with "no stream found to handle url". This happens with http, mms, rtsp protocols with asx, mov, wmv and so on.
The streams I have tried do work on my Windows PC.
I'm running Slitaz 3 on my EeePC 701 and I installed MPlayer via the "Play Video" link in the Start menu. This also installed the Mozilla plugin which crashes every time it is loaded.
It's generally better to use VLC for stuff like this, but be warned that some formats won't work unless you install the proper drivers and others just work at all.
Just as a note, asx probably won't work any time soon since it's a windows media player only format :/
Anyway, the drivers you need to install are: gstreamer, gst-plugins-base, gst-ffmpeg, gst-plugins-good, gst-plugins-bad, gst-plugins-ugly, gst-python.
Installing all those should give you all the codecs to play just about any file format, which will hopefully fix the streaming issue your having.
EDIT: Ok... seems there is a package called mplayer-codecs - maybe try installing that too?
VLC comes with a plugin for firefox and it supported the one mp3 audio stream I tested it with. It worked quite well with other distros I tried it with, but I haven't really tested it like that on SliTaz. Most online videos I watch are in flash format, which works pretty well if you install SliTaz's flash plugin.
I'm yet to find any application that works out of the box - even Windows requires the right codecs to work like you want.
Btw, mind posting links to the content you want to play? It will help us test applications so we can tell you which is the best to use and what extra you may need to install to make it to work.
Too true. Windows Media Player can't handle much on it's own anyway.
Most videos on the web are now Flash and that's working great for me. I'd like to keep Slitaz small, so I'm not keen on installing more packages just to view the odd video that's not Flash.
MPlayer handles local video just fine btw. Just seems strange that the MPlayer Firefox plugin can't do what is designed to do - play online video!
I've even attempted to use one of the urls from within the asx file: mms://a72.l1856941865.c18569.g.lm.akamaistream.net/D/72/18569/v0001/reflector:41815
I just used both links with VLC and it worked perfectly (even the asx - so I was wrong about that). It's a little weird to open because you go to File--->Open File--->Network--->Network Protocol and paste the url, but after that streaming worked without any further troubles.
Slight note about mms feeds - the images works, but the sound doesn't. This is a known problem with gstreamer compiled without amr support, which is common with most distros - even Ubuntu.
