Get into console mode. Need help
  • honmokhonmok August 2010
    I have a Sony Vaio PCG-9401( also known as PCG-630). It has a AMD K6-2+ processor. VGA is a trident Corei7. This is my first time using linux. I installed Xorg with the trident driver. I'm trying to follow the instruction on installing the graphics http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/handbook/x-window.html. But i can't get it to Console mode. I restarted the computer without opening any applications and windows, and pressed ctrl-alt-del. Didn't do anything. I have pretty good experience with windows machines. Thank you.

    Hi @honmonk --

    You really should be going on the new documentation site (I thought all the old references were gone... hmm...) on:
    => http://doc.slitaz.org/en:guides:xorg-xvesa

    Anyway: I assume that because you haven't opened any windows/applications and ca't get to a console-only mode, you have a working but basic graphics set-up and you're currently using the VESA driver, trying to 'upgrade' to the Trident driver? If this is the case, you can run most commands through the Terminal. This is the equivilent to a Windows/DOS Prompt. If you *really* want to get to text-only mode, the equiv. of MSDOS Mode of years ago, try Ctrl-Alt-F1 and then Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back in to graphical mode.

    HIH.
