saving configurations
  • gffemfgffemf April 2010
I've just discovered and tested Slitaz distro 2 and 3 and, as I did not set any home=... it didn't save any configuration.
Question 1 : if I set home=usb will it save configs on any pen drive formatted FAT 32 or it need to be Linux formatted ?
If so can I put this file on a pen drive with Puppy 3 as starter?
I know it may accept other files and directories but I do not know what will happen with Slitaz.
Question 2 : what if I set Home=hd1 : will it save config file in the root as any other file (like for example Puppy does)
or it need to have it (or its partition) Linux formatted ?
Which way of saving config do you recommend?
Maybe when everything will be set as definitive, I'll burn a new CD
Sorry to be banal but I'm quite new to Linux distros.

    Tks in advance and

    BRGDS

in my opinion home=usb should work in fat32 too with some permission problem, but this is the link to the guide:
    http://doc.slitaz.org/en:handbook:livecd#option-home-usb
you may want to check this too if you are (as you should) on 3.0 and want to use liveusb:
    http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/942/tazusb-troubles-on-fat32
by default in a fat32 key it will create a tux directory in the root of your usbkey, where tux is the default user of slitaz.
If you just want to check if you like slitaz you may want to do save /home in initramfs editing /usr/bin/tazusb and moving /home from the for cicle at line 487 to the find command at line 485, but beware of ram size issues, all in your /home dir will be in your ram, so if you have a low ram pc you better forget about it.
if you choose liveusb you could use a xvesa flavor :
    http://mirror.switch.ch/ftp/mirror/slitaz/iso/3.0/flavors/slitaz-3.0-xvesa.iso
which is probably more portable if you just want to test.
reading the handbook in http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/index.html would not take you much time and will give you a good starting point.
another good source of informations would be
    http://doc.slitaz.org/en:guides:start
concise guides and probably more updated than the handbook

    Ciao Fabio,

yes, effectively on my pen drive (it is LINUX formatted as used to boot puppy 4.2) I find a fle named initrd.gz that, I assume, should be the backup of Slitaz 2
I opened it and I saw the programs contained that are the typical of the live CD but not these I've addes for example Abiword and others.
Again if I reboot specifying "slitaz home=usb" it runs the prrofile of the cd not mine.
Mi question then is : where and how I can tell the system to save my configs prior shutting down or reboot?

    Ciao

sorry, I see now that the file "slitaz home=usb" is not a slitaz file but probably a Puppy file.
Mi question "where and how I can tell the system to save my configs prior shutting down or reboot?" remains

    Ciao

ok, let's get things clear: are you interested in booting the livecd and saving your /home on the usbkey? if yes you can save just /home and not the program you install. in a liveusb you would be able to save your apps too with tazusb writefs lzma, the hack i talked about regards /usr/bin/tazusb and would allow you to save your home dir in rootfs too, if you have enough ram size.
if you choose liveusb you will find in the root of your usbkey a boot and a tux directory. the boot directory will contains your root filesystem lzma compressed, your kernel bzImage an the file required by extlinux (you said you have a linux formatted usbkey) to boot you key. the tux directory will contains default user home directory. if you boot puppy in the same usbkey you must configure the already existing bootloader to boot slitaz as well, if you only have puppy's home in your usbkey then go on with slitaz defaults.

and to determin the partition its better to use home=UUID (the new tazusb is doing the same)

to find the UUID of your partition type
    ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid
