Can't Load Slitaz from USB.
  • Dav3rdDav3rd March 2010
I've been trying to use a USB flash drive to boot Slitaz from a Wyse 3150SE, which has a AMD Geode GX processor 400 MHz, 128 MB of ram and 32 MB of Flash Memory. I have gone into the bios of this computer, and made it so USB will be done first. I am using the slitaz-cooking.iso (14-Mar-2010 17:46 30M) and tazusb.exe to create live USB.. I don't know why, but it take over 5 mins to load through bzImage and rootfs.gz.. then it comes up to this "Switched to NOhz mode on CPU #0"

then after some time it shows this..

    .............................<6> freeing initrd ,e,ory : 149k freed
Simple Boot Flag at 0x3f set to 0x1
Kernel panic - not syncing : out of memory and no killable processes...

then it has many Call Traces, which I don't feel like posting at the moment..

any idea what I can do??

    I would try slitaz-2.0 stable

If that doesn't work do a full install, the filesystem stays on the flash drive.

Don't have to wait for the rootfs.gz to extract the entire rootfs into memory.
    Add rootdelay=8 to the bootcode

mojo, I've tried using slitaz-2.0 stable.. everything appears to be good until it hangs at this part

    "unpacking initramfs............."

I saw this, but how will this be done on ONLY a usb flash drive??

Another thing too, I was able to get Puppy Linux 4.3.1 running, but I only have 53MB of ram left to use.. I rather have Slitaz on because it can use less Ram then that.

Slitaz 2 needs 160mb ram to run the regular live cd. Try a loram flavor.

You could try a tazusb installation on a flash drive but I do not know if loram installs tazusb properly.

I do not understand why the website still lacks prominent system requirements and continues to create these frequent user problems and forum pleas.

ok, I tried using slitaz-loram.iso and it finally works..

However, it take almost 5 mins for it to load up everything and going into the desktop. Is there any way to reduce this time frame and get this thing boot up below 30 seconds??

A traditional hd installation will boot faster than the live cd, which decompresses and loads to ram.

It should be possible to boot an uncompressed gz to ram but it might still be slower than a traditional hd install.

If you can boot from usb, you could do a tradtional hd install on the usb.
