install to hard disk fails in both auto and manual modes

Hi there
My installation crashes at the point where the .gz file is uncompressed. i've tried both automatic and manual modes.
2Extracting the root system.." fails at 50%
Is there an alternative to the compression software that is used by default. If I wanted to use something like Gunzip - what would I put into the terminal to do the same job? i'm a newbie when it comes to commandline stuff soi any help is welcome. it also seems the main site is down so i don't hace access to the help docs at the moment.

what slitaz version of you are trying to install?. and if you're new to linux,I suggest you use SliTaz 3.0 version and you can download it here http://mirror.slitaz.org/iso/3.0/
