Help Please - SSH Problem
  • DroneDrone August 2010
    Hello, I'm new to SliTaz. This is my first post...

    This is SliTaz core 3.0 as downloaded from the SliTaz homepage. I'm running from CDROM on an IBM T-30 laptop which is LAN connected via wired Ethernet.

    I am having trouble with SSH. I try to SSH into SliTaz from a WinXP machine with Putty. I follow the instructions here:

    http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/handbook/secure-server.html

    I su root (cannot start dropbear as tux) and start dropbear with:

    # /etc/init.d/dropbear start

    The SSH session starts but I can not login, not with tux and no password, tux tux, root root, you name it. Nothing seems to work.

    /var/log/messages shows each login attempt is failing the password challenge.

    I edit /etc/daemons.conf from this (the default):

    DROPBEAR_OPTIONS="-w -g -b /etc/dropbear/banner"

    to this:

    DROPBEAR_OPTIONS="-b /etc/dropbear/banner"

    and restart dropbear.

    Now I can login as root with root as password over SSH, but not as the tux user. SCP via WinSCP works as root root too.

    By the way the switches are defined in dropbear(8) as:

    -w Disallow root logins.

    -g Disallow logins for root password.

    -b banner bannerfile. Display the contents of the file banner before user login (default: none).

    Why can't I log in as the tux user with the default dropbear configuration or with the -w and -g switches removed? If it is intended to allow only root logins, then perhaps the -w and -g switches should be removed permanently. Either way, in my opinion the SSH documentation needs work, which I'm willing to help with.

    By the way, the SliTaz documentation in-general seems all over the map. Two versions of the handbook floating around plus a hard to find Wiki. Hmmm... very much a WIP it seems.

    Best Regards, David

    I think, you just have to set userpassword for tux - otherwhise I have no idea, because I use it like this without any problems
