How does one install the equinox gtk engine. Used to ubuntu. So, downloaded the tar, unpacked it, cd to path, ./configure, make, make install?
In this particular case, there wasn't any make file. Merely curious how to do it. I could get the deb file and convert it of course, but dunno how and read the the deb to tazpkg converting isn't always a good option.

define shell profile for root

This is probably a very stupid question but I've spent several hours today and yesterday now searching this forum and the web in general, but couldn't figure it out.

I want to define aliases for the root account. I tried creating a .profile, a .login and a .bashrc in the /root/
I also tried defining the in aliases /etc/profile. Everything is ignored. What am I missing? Can't believe that slitaz doesn't allow for this...
When I source them it obviously works but when I exit the shell and su back in I it's not working anymore...

I am a newbie to Linux...and it is amazing! Kudos to those of you who create this stuff!!! Brilliant!

Anyway, I am testing Slitaz from the Live CD, and it is the only test distro that plays flash video properly (the others are choppy).

For reference, I have an old Dell Dimension 4400, 40gb drive, P4 1.7ghz, GeForce 5200 card (128mb or 256mb, I forget), and 1gb ram (max for the motherboard). It is not capable of booting from USB.

I enjoy Lucid Puppy 5.2 (VERY user friendly, and pretty darn quick) and a few other distros, but there is something about Slitaz that I like. Not sure what it is. It is incredibly fast to boot, and despite my inexperience, I have been able to get things to work ok.

Now, I would like to customize my setup, and burn the ISO to a CD. I think I found a website outlining how to do this, but I admit that it is a bit confusing. I think I may be able to fumble my way through it...but, I prefer to limit fumbling.

Is there a "How to Set Up Slitaz to Taste and Remaster the ISO to a CD for Dummies" tutorial? Step by step?

Forgive my ignorance on these matters. I read some of the posts with command lines and other technical things which, though I hope to learn someday, I currently find daunting.

Secondarily: does Slitaz boot/run even faster when installed to the hard drive?

Hello,

i am a newbie around here,

first allow me to say how astonishing Slitaz is, so lightweight on my Toshiba laptop, my wireless even has a stronger signal than when it was on Windows

but I had one problem:
geeqie was quitting unexpectedly whenever trying to add a metadata to a file.checking its log files, it says that i'm using gtk+ 2.16, while geeqie is designed to work on gtk+2.2 and higher.

my attempts to solve it:
i downloaded the corresponding gtk+2.2 cooking package and tried to install it on my stable slitaz. at restart, grub showed me 2 login options (1 stable and 1 cooking),but the stable wouldn't load properly.so i went to xterm, and did a
tazpkg install gtk
to force the system to revert the package to its older version, which it did.
geeqie was -naturally- still as buggy as before my attempt.

my another attempt now was to make the whole system cooking:
# tazpkg set-release cooking
then tazpkg upgrade (if i'm not wrong), but i am sure that it was some 1 hour procedure that resulted in a download of 120 MB of data in the purpose of updating the package files, and these were installed as they were downloaded.

after restart, i find the mouse is in the middle of the screen, but i can't move it.
still my Belkin wireless is working,
i can assure that my keyboard is working (it responds to the F1 that locks/unlocks the screen)
and to add up to it, my cd reader isn't reading cds any more, so i can't boot from any LiveCD
nor is my system able to boot from a usb (it doesn't have it in the booting options)
still, it has a floppy reader, but it's been a looong time since it has been used, and i'm not sure if it would work at all.

I would appreciate any help on my issue,

Note: I don't know what the shortcut to xterm is, so I can't be much helpful in the exact history of the commands i did, nor can i give more info about my system as long as I can't access it.

Hallo Everybody,

for a school project I would like to get an idea who constitutes Slitaz. I am not interested in names. According to my present opinion it has a Swiss-French origin, enriched with some Englisch and/or American flavours, but still holds a European focus. Right?
Are the people who build and run it
- mainly IT-professionals or motivated amateurs that got educated over the time?
In some few threads I found nice and quick support but unfortunately these guys do not respond to private mail via this forum.
So I have to out myself: I am a gymnasium teacher for biology and geography from a provincial town close to Frankfurt in Germany. I am passionale IT-amateur who admits to learn technical things only to the very amount that is unavoidable to get the things that I want. Therefore Linux is much easier for me, whatever complicated the details may be, as it has an own logic which I miss totally in the Microsoft environment. I learned quick that DOS is a kind of Pidgin English borne from Unix with the aim of vendor-lock-in.

May you help me to obtain an idea who Slitaz is?

still the the frequency of the cpu does not change - always 1400 Mhz - normally it should go down to 600 Mhz

DVD Dual Layer access

Hi. SliTaz is very cool, but I was going to use it from a USB stick to repair my hard disk. Then I found out there is no fsck, and it doesn't seem to exist in the available packages. Is there really no fsck? That seems so weird. Is there some way to get it?

Virtual Interfaces in SliTaz

Is there any way to create virtual interfaces in SliTaz?
I used:

vconfig add eth0 0

But all I got was an error:

vconfig: can't open '/proc/net/vlan/config' : No such file or directory

I installed ethtool and tried ifconfig:

ifconfig eth0:0 192.168.2.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up

Any kind of help will be highly appreciated.

I have got success in Slitaz 3.0.
But now I am giving a try to slitaz cooking.
But this time I am not able to get my graphics card working in slitaz cooking. I have Intel Mobile 4 series express chipset graphics controller. And my laptop supports resolution upto 1366x768.
If I run tazx it asks for my graphics and on selecting intel it downloads and installs the required file. But in the last it gives an error : Undefined module i915 in modules.dep
Even after installing dri/drm I cannot modprobe drm. It says undefined module.

Gnumeric cell text when using xls with Slitaz 3.0

I'm using slitaz 3.0 iso. I installed gnumeric from tazpkg command.

When I open .gnumeric files in gnumeric and type something in a cell then, as I'm typing the cell text changes.

If I try the same with .xls file, then I don't see anything in cell text area. Strangely, if I open the .xls from inside pcmanfm, then the cell text area starts showing what I'm typing.

Am I the only one seeing this issue? What is the solution other than opening .xls inside pcmanfm?

How to start cairo-clock automatically

I have downloaded cairo-clock and I like it very much. But the problem is that it requires xcompmgr enabled to run.
So every time I have to manually enable xcompmgr and then run cairo-clock

I tried to add xcompmgr and cairo-clock to autostart.sh in ~.config/openbox/ directory, but every time I login, xcompmgr gets enabled but cairo-clock does not run saying xcompmgr must be enabled

Hey I have laptop which has a synaptic multi-gesture toucpad. In windows I use synaptic touchpad v7.2 drivers. But in slitaz my touchpad is not working. Infact my touchpad does not work in any linux like ubuntu,knoppix,etc. But it worked in OpenSolaris

Pentium 4 and cpu_freq troubles

I hate to restart a topic that's been discussed several times here already, however I'm having a really hard time with the cpu frequency scaling in Slitaz cooking.

I installed all the p[ackages and kernel modules, all cpu* commands appear to be working ok. In my case the module is p4_clockmod

The issue is that it appears that no matter what I do the actual cpu frequency /or the governor/ do not change at all.
I issue echo ondemand > ...scaling governor, but the file doesn't change at all. The cpufreq-set command also executes successfully however my cpu is stuck at GHz. I'm sure it can and does as low as 250MHz when idling because prior to installing Slitaz I was running Debian Lenny and never had an issue with it
Is it possible that the ondemand support was somehow disabled in the kernel?

Please advice....anyone

Can't run XServer on slitaz cooking version

Booting stable version on my notebook without a problem.
Cooking is ok in text mode. Problems start when
starting X. After running X or startX I see few lines of log
and screen goes blank. Its possible to achieve same result by starting CD
with args: slitaz irqpoll screen=1024x768x16

Complete newbie couple of questions

Due to a long term health problem I have some time on my hands and have an old laptop (Pen II 300mhz, 197mb ram, WiFi via pcmcia and a 4gb HDD). I decided to play around with Linux on it and I fould Slitaz by far the best 'live' distro and have it installed on the HD now. I have trawled the forum but cannot find the answers to these few questions. 1. VLC player will play video in double size screen but crashes on full screen. Can I do anything to help. (The laptop played vid fine on Xp but took 20 minutes to boot). 2. Where in the file system can I find the default Slitaz wallpaper image as I changed it and prefer it as it was(stable not cooking). 3. Is there a trash can or are deleted items gone. 3. How do I uninstall anything I have installed, all via the package manager. 4. Finally I notice many distros have a small partition 'swap' but Slitaz does not. Is there any advantage/disadvantage for this. With my low ram sould I /could I have one. Sorry to ask what must seem like basic questions but I am totally new to Linux and trying to get to grips with it. Many congratulations to the Slitaz team as it detected the wireless and sound etc which almost all of the larger packages failed to do. Thanks in anticipation of your help.

CPU Heating

I have an AMD Athlon II p340 2.2 GHZ cpu, and it seems to heat up a lot when I run slitaz. I checked the cpu usage and it's close to 0 so there is no program taking up all of the cpu. The cpu fan constantly runs at full speed and when I reboot to windows after sunning slitaz, the temps are very high(~65), but decrease to a low idle temp(~50)
