I'm using SliTaz Cooking 20091104 for three days on a very old machine (Intel PII 350Mhz, 256 RAM, Matrox G400) because of my main pc fail...
Yesterday I was trying to start Skype, but xterm told me:

QIconvCodec::convertFromUnicode: using ASCII for conversion, iconv_open failed
QIconvCodec::convertToUnicode: using ASCII for conversion, iconv_open failed

I googled a little bit and I found that probabily it's a library problem, but I'm not very sure. Here's my question: has anyone experimented a issue like this, can I find a solution or should I give up? ]]>

How could we parameter the package manager to go through this proxy ?

http://enna.geexbox.org/

http://captainigloo.wordpress.com/2009/12/21/enna-compilation-on-ubuntu-3/

It is built upon the E17 libs and several other custom libraries developed by the GeeXboX team. Building this package would require updates to the E17 libraries currently in the slitaz cooking repository. It also would require building enna, of course, and libplayer, libvalhalla, and libnfo. If it's of any help, enna has already been built for Arch:

enna 0.4.0-1 > http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33425

libplayer 1.0.0-1 > http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33426

libvalhalla 1.0.0-1 > http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=33427

libnfo > http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=31574

I've just installed a new cooking today (2010-01-10) and samba is broken :
  • * it wants libldap-2.3 but libldap-2.4 is the current version.
  • * acl dependency is missing

For information, samba size is quite big, I've installed :

slitaz-base + bash + screen = 36.7M

- perl = 119.8M

I don't know why perl is needed for samba ?

I would suggest moving "perl" to SUGGESTED and providing a samba-no-cups package for people who don't have a printer.

I have test since yesterday many "lite" Linux for install one of them in a friend's old PC of mine and i discovery that slitaz its an excelent alternative (and seriously I though changa my actual ubuntu ^_^, becuase this one is very very fast). However, I didn't understand some things about Xvesa.

I have read in slitaz docs that "X server called Xvesa from the Xorg project" but in other parts in Internet says Xvesa is an "implementation" from XFree86. Probably, it's not important, but I couldn't find good information (in some cases contraditory) about Xvesa.

1.- My Laptop has 1280x800 px resolution and in some pages say Xvesa don't support that reolution (1024x768 px). is it true?? For my friend's computer is not a big problem, but for me may a better idea install Xorg.

2.- In particular, Xvesa does not have a 256-color mode (depth=8). But in resolution option there is a True Color option that, from Wikipedia, means 256-color mode for Red, Green and Blue. (contradictory!!)

3.- All letters and images have an annoying blur that could not fix, I tried with Openbox Configuration Manager but nothing. Any suggestions??

4.- What is the difference betwen Windows Manager (OpenBox, JWM) and Desktop environment (Enlightenment)?? and Which one do slitaz use??

That's all!!

(just for now!!)

new here.. I lately tried slitaz on my eee701 with 512mb ram and 4gb flashdrive, and I am very impressed with the speed. I am using crunchbang now, which I like. But slitaz seems nice, fast, with openbox and all. cool.

so with Slitaz 2.0 I have some problems writh the right screen resolution (not in the options) and of enabling touchpad-scrolling and function keys on my eee (volume mainly). also I could not install apps from the GUI, probably the repository is wrong.. I checked the forum but could not find so much information. Grateful for any link.

these days I want to try Slitaz to resecurrect an very old 1998 toshiba laptop with windows98, 2gb HD and 32mb ram. it is supposed to go to a social centre for kids. I want to use the default Minefield-browser, Abiword, picture-viewer and VLC.. do you think it is a good idea or merely a waste of time?

Cool distro!

Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player. Get the latest Flash player.
~~~
I found the get-java6-jre package by searching in the package manager and double-clicked to install it (clicking 'install' on the subsequent pop-up screen) but I was confused by the required license agreement because only the first few lines appeared in the terminal and referred to an 'Accept' button I'd have to click before java would be installed. I clicked enter a few times, decided I was wasting my time (there's not way an 'accept' button is going to appear in a terminal, right?) so I closed the terminal. Of course I contined to get the error message on youtube. Finally I opened the package manager, searched out the get-java6-jre package (again), double clicked on it and clicked on 'Install'. Once again the first paragraph of the license agreement appeared with a highlighted --MORE-- prompt beneath it. Clicking on enter brought up the next line or two of the licensing agreement but there are a lot of lines there and, like most folks, I'm disinclined to read the entire agreement (yes, I know, mondo-geeks will be appalled, welcome to the real world) so I simply held down the Enter key until I saw the yes/no prompt being reprinted repeatedly, typed 'yes', hit 'Enter' and, finally, the Java Runtime Enviroment was installed.
That didn't help. I was still getting the error message on youtube. I went back to the package manager, clicked on the search tab, typed in 'flash' and clicked on 'Packages'. When the get-flash-plugin appeared (marked as having been installed) I double-clicked on it, clicked on 'Install' and, after a brief delay, clicked 'y' to install the missing dependency (found by the package manager). Presto; youtube videos now play (sort of).
The machine has a 500 MHz Celeron processor with 192 MB of PC100 RAM. The video comes from an ATI Rage card which has 16 MB of inbuilt RAM. In all honesty, it lacks the resources needed to handle youtube videos but if one is patient enough to hit the pause button and let the video load before hitting the play button then some youtube videos are actually viewable.
This machine is ancient in terms of current technology but remains remarkably usable and surprisingly fast thanks to Slitaz. Thank you Slitaz developers. You rock!]]>
