I've tried ubuntu, mint, and several others. They are easy for an older person like myself to use ( I'm 62), but they don't run worth a dang on my old IBM T23 notebook which is a pentium 3 1.1 gigahertz with 256 MB of RAM. How difficult would Slitaz be to learn to work with if you're a old, slow, upper middle aged person like myself? Please be honest but let's not be mean, I've already had a few on other forums tell me that older newbees aren't needed.

Maybe we should put something like that on the wiki next to the Handbook and the Cookbook.
The page could just contain brief descriptions of the problems, e.g. boot liveCD and just get vertical colored lines, and a couple of links to the forum discussions that give solutions. Of course it would be better to add details of the solution, but a link to the forum is better than nothing.

The handbook being a bit out of date, maybe we should start editing the pages just by putting a note at the top. This information refers to Slitaz 2.0.
That would be a start, and it would help newcomers.

Tried a Dell B110 w/768 mb Ram with an ACER 18.5 X183CH crt and it booted livecd. However like 2.0 the fonts are so big it overpowers (takes up) too much real estate and is not acceptable. The splash screen has the buttons only showing the top half. A site like yahoo is too big to fit the screen.

[SOLVED] how to make new kernel module available (without the wok) ? http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/817/solved-how-to-make-new-kernel-module-available-without-the-wok-s Thu, 25 Mar 2010 17:29:08 +0100 Totoetsasoeur 817@/index.php?p=/discussions After compiling kernel with new module ti_usb_3410_5210, I am wondering how to make it available for the fresh compiled kernel.

Here are the files *.ko related to ./usb/serial/ after new kernel compilation:

root@slitaz:~# ls /my_wok/slitaz/wok/linux/linux-2.6.30.6/drivers/usb/serial/*ko
/my_wok/slitaz/wok/linux/linux-2.6.30.6/drivers/usb/serial/ch341.ko

/my_wok/slitaz/wok/linux/linux-2.6.30.6/drivers/usb/serial/pl2303.ko
/my_wok/slitaz/wok/linux/linux-2.6.30.6/drivers/usb/serial/ti_usb_3410_5052.ko
/my_wok/slitaz/wok/linux/linux-2.6.30.6/drivers/usb/serial/usbserial.ko
root@slitaz:~#

I did installed the fresh compiled kernel with:

root@slitaz:~# tazpkg install /my_wok/slitaz/packages/linux-2.6.30.6.tazpkg --forced

But not all new modules seem to be loadable (actually only 3 instead of 6 modules):

root@slitaz:~# ls /lib/modules/2.6.30.6-slitaz/kernel/drivers/usb/serial/
ch341.ko.gz pl2303.ko.gz usbserial.ko.gz
root@slitaz:~#

Would anyone be so kind to tell me:
- q1) why only 3 modules (ch341.ko.gz, pl2303.ko.gz and usbserial.ko.gz) are available instead of the 6 requested modules (ch341.ko, ftdi_sio.ko, option.ko, pl2303.ko, ti_usb_3410_5052.ko and usbserial.ko)?
- q2) what is the procedure to make those 6 modules available for loading with modprobe?

Thank you for you feedback.

I thought I'd just post this to help any Linux Newbies like me. I've install Slitaz on my Dell laptop. I first installed the Stable-version but did not get the resolution option during boot. It ran and installed but I had a black border around the screen, the resolution not filling the full screen. I then clicked on the 'LiveCD to taste' link one the download page and downloaded the slitaz-3.0-xvesa.iso. This gave me the resolution option and fills my screen 1024x768.

My main point in posting this is I've found that if I start the laptop with my power lead plugged in, the system does boot OK but does not show the taskbar. All I need do is make sure the power lead is unplugged when I switch on. I did find a solution on the forum which suggested this saying "remove the battery plugin" but being a bit dense I thought it meant the software plugin of the taskbar GUI showing the battery content. It was hours before I realized I actually had to just pull out the power lead. Well, I am 60.

Thank you all on the Forum.

ln -s /home/*/scripts/conv-install

Then when you download something to your download folder. Do this from terminal as root:
conv-install /home/*/Downloads/myexample.deb

It will then convert and install for you.

Below are the two scripts:
Short version. This one just converts and installs.

#! /bin/bash

# automated convert and install script from downloaded binaries.
# created 4/17/2010
# creator Rupp

cd /home/*/Downloads
for file in $*
do
echo
echo
echo Converting $file
echo
tazpkg convert $file
done
echo
echo
echo
echo
for t in *.tazpkg; do
tazpkg install "$t" --forced
done

Full one below with the options of moving your converted ".tazpkg" to a backup folder after it is installed. Then an option to delete the original binary. You can answer no also. It will just skip those steps

#! /bin/bash

# automated convert and install script from downloaded binaries.
# created 4/17/2010
# creator Rupp
cd /home/*/Downloads
for file in $*
do
echo
echo
echo Converting $file
echo
tazpkg convert $file
done
echo
echo
echo
echo
for t in *.tazpkg; do
tazpkg install "$t" --forced
done
echo
echo
read -p "Should I move the .tazpkg to your backup folder? ";
if [ $REPLY == "y" ]; then
echo
echo
echo done;
fi

for t in *.tazpkg; do
mv "$t" /media/disk/tazpkg
done
echo
echo
echo
read -p "Should I delete the original binary you converted?";
if [ $REPLY == "y" ]; then
echo
echo
echo done;
fi
for file in $*
do
echo
echo
rm $file
done
echo
echo

Give it a try. I have made another one for those of you who installed pacman from Archlinux. Download and convert then install from command line similar to tazpkg get-install. If anyone is interested in it let me know.

I also noticed that even after I set the time correct on boot that it is still 4-5hrs off in gmail. I had similar problems with gmail in Puppy Linux because I didn't set the timezone before checking my email after a fresh install. Clearing the cache and cookies and logging back in fixed that. I can do the same in Slitaz but it is still 4-5hrs off. Then because I change my time I get this message when I boot: "filesystem last write in the future". Sorry if the wording is off but I am going by memory. Then it checks for errors. Not everytime though. That is my only problem with slitaz and I feel it is going to lead to corrupting the install. I just thought I would ask because I am at a loss.

[SOLVED] A difficult case for xorg http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/1044/solved-a-difficult-case-for-xorg Sun, 18 Apr 2010 15:04:54 +0200 jpeg 1044@/index.php?p=/discussions The xvesa flavor works fine. at 800x600. I haven't tried to get a better resolution than that.

If I install and try xrandr it says:
> Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 640 x 480, maximum 640 x 480
> default connected 640x480+0+0 0mm x 0mm
> 640x480 0.0*

Nevertheless a look inside the Xorg log file shows
> (II) VESA(0): Supported VESA Video Modes:
> (II) VESA(0): 720x400@70Hz
> (II) VESA(0): 640x480@60Hz

> (II) VESA(0): 800x600@60Hz
> (II) VESA(0): 800x600@75Hz
> (II) VESA(0): 1024x768@60Hz
> (II) VESA(0): 1024x768@75Hz
I suppose those are the modes the driver can do, not necessarily ones that the monitor can do as well, because right after that comes the EDID info and a pile of Modelines, one of which is
> (II) VESA(0): Modeline "1024x768"x85.0 94.39 1024 1088 1200 1376 768 769 772 807 -hsync +vsync (68.6 kHz)
After that it says
> (II) VESA(0): Searching for matching VESA mode(s):
the best of which is
> Mode: 105 (1024x768)
but that seems to be only 8 bit color depth
Then it says
> (II) VESA(0): Monitor0: Using hsync range of 30.00-69.00 kHz
> (II) VESA(0): Monitor0: Using vrefresh range of 48.00-120.00 Hz
> (II) VESA(0): Not using mode "1024 768" (no mode of this name)
> (II) VESA(0): Not using built-in mode "640x400" (no mode of this name)
> (--) VESA(0): Virtual size is 640x480 (pitch 640)
> (**) VESA(0): Built-in mode "640x480"

and some colored vertical lines appear.
Strangely enough the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file has *no* Modes lines and adding them doesn't help.

I then tried tazx and installed the intel drivers since lspci says:
> 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82815 Chipset Graphics Controller (CGC) (rev 02)
The following packages got installed:
> linux-agp, linux-drm, mesa-dri, mesa-dri, xorg-libXv, xorg-libXvMC, xorg-xf86-video-intel

The result: X won't even start!

> agpgart support or that the agpgart kernel module is loaded.
> UnloadModule: a pile of modules
> (EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

A few checks:
cat /proc/modules
> agpgart 25980 0 - Live 0xe073b000
ls -l /dev/agpgart
> crw-r--r-- 1 root root 10, 175 Mar 28 17:49 /dev/agpgart
The logfile has the same EDID info in it and the same Modelines
The xorg.conf file uses the intel driver, and it still doesn't have and Modes specified in it, and adding them still doesn't help.
Adding write permissions for everyone on /dev/agpgart doesn't help.]]>
