Extracting .rar files in Slitaz 3.0

Hey,
I installed slitaz 3.0 from an usb stick to my hdd.
After i downloaded some music (in .rar) i cant extract it.
I downloaded .rar and p7zip but if i want to open my .rar archive with one of the two (after installed,started from the /usr/bin folder) nothing happens.....
Can someone tell my how i can open .rar archives in slitaz???

Modular slitaz

I did this iso cause i think you guys are great. I'm getting about 40mb in htop with my modular slitaz. The normal slitaz is 32mb in htop. The other 8mb is my initramfs. I hoping to help you guys with wok repo and other stuff.

Problem setting screen dimensions

Hello to everybody. I tried to use Slitaz 3.0 live on my Asus eeePC 701 and to virtualize it with Vmware on Windows 7 and in both cases I found the same problem: I was'nt able to find a way to set screen resolution and dimensions. Apparently there is no GUI for doing it. Is there anybody wishing to explain me a simple way (step by step, please... I am a newbie) to change screen dimensions? Thanks a lot!

How to block Wine from internet access?

I am afraid that Wine and windows applications might possibly pull in malware from the internet.

Is it possible in Slitaz to write a small script to put in the slitaz menu that first disconnects the net and then starts a windows program in Wine? or even better: have Wine blocked from accessing to the net at all?

[SOLVED] main menu "Preferences|Desktop Wallpaper" broken

Something i updated caused the "Desktop Wallpaper" section of the "Preferences" menu on the main menu (the red button) to stop working.

I can still invoke the command manually from the command-line with this:


$ pcmanfm --show-pref=3

and it works as it should, opening the dialog window and allowing me to change the wallpaper, and correctly changing it when i click the "Close" button.

But when i try to to use the menu to do this, a xterm window opens instead of the Dialog, with this message:


xterm: Can't execvp -e: No such file or directory
$

Any ideas how to fix it?

Hello everybody, I got a USB Missile/Rocket/whatever the thing's called for my birthday today, and was extremely saddened when I found there was no official Linux software. But I did eventually find this: http://fatal.se/fulhack/ahmissile/ I tried installing it from source, but it said that my automake was outdated and didn't detect that glib was installed at all, so I tried the .deb, which installed, but reads "Segmentation Fault" when run. If anyone has ever used this program, or knows about glib and automake, please help.

I know that for chess lovers, SliTaz provides eboard.tazpkg, which is a very nice gui for playing gnuchess. But on some of my older machines, xboard works much better. It's not as slick as eboard, but is more lightweight and much faster.

I used tazpkg convert to convert a Debian xboard.deb package to the SliTaz format. But now when i want to install it on various of my other machines, i have to hunt for it and copy it over from a machine which has it, and i find myself wishing that it was on a SliTaz mirror. How can i submit it?

I think we should have a Slitaz marketplace or more like donation/reward for the developers. They do quite a lot :)
I think Slitaz is a great software, there are various reasons why people still dont you it as their main distro. I believe a reward scheme can provide a faster why to get most problems solved and ultimately help the slitaz community. Because slitaz developers contribute on their free time

Problem: I would like a Network Manager Package on slitaz like lubuntu(network manager on lxde). I saw a flavour that claimed to have networkmanager but it looks like it has been removed.

I still am working on basic functions for slitaz but eventually run-in-ram and tazlito are attractions and current features make progress on an old suggestion of mine about only booting to ram what you need at the moment.

Please correct me if I am misunderstanding..

The problem is how to be lightweight (ltw) but have access to heavyweight (hvw) features on demand.

Currently, I think I can have a ltw frugal in a hvw traditional hd install and the ltw can run the ooo that is installed on the hvw (as root, not sure if that is a security issue). That is nice but inefficient because, even if the ltw is only 50mb, that 50mb is a duplicate of 50mb on the hvw.

Is it possible or desirable to have one hvw hd install but select on-the-fly what is booted to ram or returned to hd, such as by a switchboard that might look like an installed tapkg list?

1. You can access to any hdd from a frugal boot .
2. A frugall install is nothing more than a grub aiming a rootfs.gz
So, if you have alreadz Slitaz installed on HD , you can easily add any rootfs.gz
in it's boot folder and add a Grub entry to boot on that rootfs.gz

3. (If you are interested), you can use
# tazpkg link OpenOffice3 /media/disk
to use your application from your installed Slitaz (on /media/disk) into your current slitaz session.

and create a new rootfs.gz with these links :)

how to switch keyboard layout in X?

I have setup ru keymap with ru_RU locale with tazkeymap. But I'm stuck with how do I switch keyboard layout in XOrg. In console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) it switches with right Ctrl, but letters are not displayed correctly, there must be something wrong with console font.

Android emulator not working

Apart for the non-free nvidia driver, Slitaz works perfectly for my need, so I come back to my main problem:

My laptop is too slow for Android development under Vista, so I'm trying under Slitaz.
Unfortunatly, everytime I try to launch the Android Emulator from Eclipse, I got a "X connection to broken :0.0 (explicit kill or server shutdown)" error, whatever the XOrg driver I use (vesa or nv)

According http://developer.android.com/guide/developing/tools/emulator.html, I noticed Android emulator use QEmu (to emulate the ARM processor) so it means (?) the Android emulator is a QEmu window with the phone skin ....
Is it why it doesn't work on Slitaz ?

I tried under XUbuntu without problem....but I really would like to use Slitaz, not Xubuntu :(

Got many 1.44mB floppies!!, can I install version 3, in my old laptop?, how?

I have 560Z thinkpad, PII 288MHz, 98MB RAM, have external floppy and USB (no boot option from USB on Bios). I have bootable floppy disc driver!. After trying to get the floppy boot and USB to load, I couldn't get it working. (likely not doing something right). I took out the HD and put in another modern thinkpad and installed the version 3 to HD and reinstall the HD to 560Z and again does not work.

Now I gathered the all the floppies and ready to install the version 3 (likely loram version), and hopefully install to HD on 560Z. Can someone give me directions on how to do this? I won't have ethernet connection so likely have to have a light web browser in the floppy.

user logout X session, no new login dialog

I logout X session, the screen goes blank, but I am not presented with a new dialog to login. The screen remains black (blank) and I must use the front power button to restart computer. On one occasion I was presented with a new login dialog, but this is usually not presented, and the screen remains blank (black).

SliTaz 3.0 packages grayed out in GtkDialog's right panel

I took a look at the packages on the DVD, and they are all grayed out. Because this monitor is a little defective, I couldn't even read the name of any package in the right panel. I was fumbling around trying to highlight a package so I could read it, and I managed to accidentally move a single package (adie-1.6.36tazpkg) from the right panel to the left panel. I cannot return that package to the right panel in the GtkDialog. As a Puppy user, I am not accustomed to all this permission nonsense.

Did liveUSB. On reboot => File missing!?! Docs out of date?
Maybe I am stupid? I do not understand how the package will be implemented.
1. Is it possible to source compilers without implementing some programs, if not, what packages?
2. Is it possible to download directly eclipse.org and unzip and run?
3. Works ttySn (RS232), but that a lot of trickery with the script files?
4. (Elm Street 13?) HSDPA modem (icon225), found some in this forum
about this, I did not understand anything.

I found this linux version, chose it because of the latest kernel,
have the most support for USB? according to data from the kernel folks.

I will probably never understand why it is so incredibly difficult

Slow Wireless manager before installing Intel 3945 driver

Hi,

I'm currently trying to customize Slitaz for my need.
Launching from a LiveCD 3.0, I could easily connect on internet using my ethernet card to donwload package needed
I noticed than to load my Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network driver, I need to go the Wireless Manager->drivers
When I open WirelessManager, it takes aaaages to open (scanning for Wifi networks?)
So
1- do you know how to fix this ?
2- will it occurs with a custom LiveCD with needed drivers and configuration ?

Gunzip instead of lzma

Hi. I am still trying to install this interesting distro. I am trying the install by hand and am stuck with the lzma command as seen in the handbook (http://doc.slitaz.org/en:handbook:installation):

# lzma d rootfs.gz -so | cpio -id

I need to use gunzip instead of lzma, since my distro (DSL) doesn't have it and its not easy to install. What would be the appropriate command (and *switches*) using gunzip?

I want to change my gtk+ theme for windows and menu, but have no idea where to copy the new theme (no /home/.themes in slitaz) - the filesearch does not really help finding anything.. could someone tell me how I can change my gtk theme? openbox theme is easier to find.

Everybody can post links here, through a file-sharing service or the Slitaz Community ( http://community.slitaz.org/image )

Loose guidelines:

* Resolution should be 1024x768. I'm going to try to put together a script to crop/unstrech the image for widescreens...

* Try not to let your work take a lot of disk space. Tip: If your image has a lot of plain background or simple designs, PNG is a good format for that. For pictures or complex images, JPEG can save that in a smaller file than PNG can. However, PNG is a free format, so it would be preferred.

* Remember that it has to be your work, or check the copyright licensing to make sure it is redistributable.

* Try to use the slitaz colors ( http://slitaz.org/en/artwork/ )

Contributors, please verify this -- I'm basing this off of what I remember about the 2.0 art contest, so let me know what's wrong!

[Solved] X Forwarding?

Hello again, now that my wireless works I've been playing music on my desktop via ssh again. Problem is, my music's in a bunch of different folders and not really organized at all. Usually I would use Rhythmbox remotely, but it seems that the ssh client installed on Slitaz lacks X forwarding. Is there a way to switch to a client that does support it, and does anybody know of a good one?
