I am trying to install SliTaz on Roboard 110. I've used a live cd to install the system on a sd card. When trying to boot, a kernel panic occurs, and an error is displayed saying "please append correct 'root=' boot option" and the progress just stops.

I have been messing around with menu.lst but nothing I have done has seemed to work.

Nvidia 8600M GS unrecognized by non-free nvidia driver ? http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/1115/nvidia-8600m-gs-unrecognized-by-non-free-nvidia-driver-s Mon, 26 Apr 2010 11:08:16 +0200 William 1115@/index.php?p=/discussions
I have an Asus F3Sv with a GForce 8600M GS 256M.
It's too slow for Android development under Vista, so I'm trying under Slitaz

Unfortunatly, everytime I try to launch the Android Emulator from Eclipse, I got a "X connection to broken :0.0 (explicit kill or server shutdown)" error
You could say it's an Eclipse/ADT bug, but I need to be sure (I really hope it's not! Slitaz is so fast on my laptop!)
From what I need all over the net, this error occurs when no X Server is found.

My first try was with a raw 3.0, initial driver ==> same error
Then I added Xorg + vesa ==> same error
Then I tried with Xorg + nv ==> same error (but better resolution and 2nd monitor clone handled!)
Then I tried with non-free nvidia driver==> unable to install it

I noticed several problem so perhaps fixing one of them will fix them all
1/ after install throught Tazhw box, I have a "Xlib : extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0" (uhoh! :0.0 like in Eclipse) + Error : couldn't find RGB GLX visual or fbconfig....of course nvidai X Server config complains "you doesn't appear to use Nvidia X driver"
glxinfo gives the same errors about GLX

2/ if I try to launch with this xorg.conf, I came back to terminal with a "NVIDIA not found" error

3/ if I edit xorg.conf, I have
Section "Device"
Identifier "Card0"
Driver "nvidia"
VendorName "unknown vendor"
BoardName "unknown board"
endsection
I see some people on the net with the correct value for this 8600M GS card...so what ?

4/ I followed advice on the wiki and fixed the dri path, added the missing modes, etc....still nothing....

it really seems it doesn't detect my card....while nv "sees" it...

any hint, test to do ?

Thanks

I do not know the history of this machine, I do not know the branch, maybe it was assembled manualy by someone.
The video card, is a 3dpro sis 6326, the slot it use is different than others. memory 128+64+32.
The machine works well with others distros as Puppy and Zenwalk, last versions.
The slitaz CD is OK because it install in other new machine (acer).
OK, during the instalation I answer the language, the keymap and everything is OK.
Then, the msg "starting hardware abstraction layer: hall..." appears on the screen.
then, the screen goes blind, 100% blind. blind , blind!
Could someone help me.

I use "tazusb gen-liveusb" to create bootable Slitaz on USB. My USB key is Flash and 2GB. I use "/dev/sde1" to boot Slitaz. "sde1" is FAT32 and 500MB. I use "/dev/sde2" as "/home". "sde2" is 1.5GB in size and Ext2. All as suggested in Slitaz forums.

I boot from USB made from "tazusb gen-liveusb" command, all boot "ok" but autologin "tux" not work so I login as "root". Strange? What is "tux" password? When I make USB from "pendrivelinux" USB tool all boot "ok" and "tux" login work "ok".

I make changes to environment, install new packages, remove other packages. Then I use "tazusb writefs gzip" to create "rootfs.gz" which is found in "/", not "/home" as some forum writing say even though I mount "/dev/sde2" as "/home" and "mount" say I do that. So I "mv /rootfs.gz /home" and prove file exist in "/home" using "ls -al". I reboot. All previous settings do not show up but "/home" is mounted and 'rootfs.gz" is there...same file I save.

I spend many many hour on this and reading Slitaz web and forum but cannot make work. Slitaz look nice and have packages I like but cannot save setup make Slitaz useless to me.

What is wrong?

The card is a Linksys EtherFast PCMCIA/CardBus PC Card, Model No: PCM100

The leds on the card light up when the card is plugged in but I doubt it is really detected. Here is what I observed:

1. When I click on the network connection icon on the right bottom corner of the desktop I get:
Name: eith0
Status: error
2. Then I click the button to "Configure". Under "Connections' I only see "lo"
3. The Linksys card is not listed from "lspci" command. I can only see two Card Bus bridge entries listed.

I would appreciate it very much if someone can point me to the right direction how to solve the issue.

Do I need to install certain driver for my ethernet adapter card? Since I cannot connect to internet with this laptop can I somehow download the driver using other computer and then transfer the driver to this laptop and run it? Sorry but I am new to linux.

I'm an English teacher and I can help translating some help articles into Russian. As I see, there seem to be almost no articles already translated except the initial help page and some Taz* manuals. So I can help with the Live CD ones and some others, if you need. How can I do this? (And should I? :)) Can I use OpenOffice.org Writer to write the articles manually and in what format am I to save them and how can I get them to the wiki style?

Thank you.

The problem I have is the wifi.
I can not connect to the network with wpa2 security.
After several attempts were logged for a moment, I ping google.com, and it worked, but the navigation is extremely slow. After a few seconds it was disconnected from the network.

I tryed: # / etc / init.d / restart network.sh
and gives me the error: Warning: failed to attach to wpa_supplicant (referring to wlan0)

Is there any form to solve this?

I must say that I have also debian gnu / linux with xfce and the wifi works perfect. the card is an Atheros AR5001X and works with the ath5k driver

my first good surprise was the distribution size, only 80 Mo, just perfect for my 2Go hard drive

my second good surprise was the installation, it was just perfect, I followed the instructions and it works. Just one remark, I have to manually edit grub and the menu.lst file

my third good surprise was speed. SliTaz is just as fast as light

my fourth good surprise was the wifi, it works out of the box

What went wrong, not out of the box

# modprobe mmc_block
# modprobe mmc_core

I think the solution is to create a SliTaz LiveCD and then migrate the data from the mounted and working filesystems to my hard disk partitions:

"Hard Disk Upgrade Mini How-To"
http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/Hard-Disk-Upgrade/introduction.html

This tutorial uses LILO as the bootloader, but I think it should be fairly simple to modify this for GRUB.

Any advice on how to pull this off would be appreciated.

Thanks]]>
Solved: Package Installation http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/1484/-solved-package-installation Mon, 12 Jul 2010 20:46:53 +0200 dense 1484@/index.php?p=/discussions Can I use the OPHCrack LiveCD to Install SliTaz? http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/1468/can-i-use-the-ophcrack-livecd-to-install-slitazs Wed, 07 Jul 2010 15:35:03 +0200 Barry 1468@/index.php?p=/discussions
Also I have set up a partitioning scheme for custom locations for /, /boot, /var, etc. The documentation on your web site seems to imply that the installer does a "one size fits all" installation without provisions for the custom placing of filesystems.

Question 1: Should I use the SliTaz Installer on the OPHCrack LiveCD or go through the trouble of burning a "pure" SliTaz CD?

Question 2: Does the SliTaz Installer allow custom installs?

slitaz-3.0-xvesa frugal install on fat32/DOS http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/1130/slitaz-3.0-xvesa-frugal-install-on-fat32dos Wed, 28 Apr 2010 11:46:57 +0200 tikbalang 1130@/index.php?p=/discussions #3 if disk is already partitioned and grub4dos installed.

1. format disk using FAT32 filesystem.
- note the volume serial number using VOL or CHKDSK.

2. install grub4dos to MBR.
- copy support files GRLDR and MENU.LST to root of first partition
- verify that grub4dos boots.

3. copy contents of slitaz-3.0-xvesa.iso to root of first partition.

/boot/*
/images/*
/index.html
/md5sum
/readme
/styles.css

4. edit/add slitaz entry to MENU.LST:

title Slitaz
find --set-root --ignore-floppies /boot/bzimage
kernel /boot/bzimage rw root=/dev/null autologin home=4039-E1EC lang=en_US kmap=us
initrd /boot/rootfs.gz

home=????-???? --> use volume serial or see slitaz docs
lang=en_US --> optional, or set to your locale
kmap=us --> optional, or set to your locale

5. reboot.

notes:

- i failed using slitaz-3.0.iso. i get "failed to execute login command" error. must be xorg related.

- you need to run "tazusb writefs gzip" after installing software to make permanent. application settings will be saved in /username/*.

i hope future versions will still be friendly to frugal install.

Is it normal ? On root it's ok

Otherwise, is there anyway to autologin on root with grub ?

I ve just bought right now a laptop for my mother who is c-o-m-p-l-e-t-e-l-y computer illeterate. So i've think Slitaz will be the most best OS to do basic things as surfing on Internet and watching DVD's.

But if she can't eject a DVD ... ]]>
