RS232 conector' drivers support

Dear gentlemen,

I'm a rookie about Slitaz and i have a serial RS232 connector on my board too.

is there any driver/package to install it. If so, how can i test if Slitaz is recognizing the serial connector or not?

Is there any kind of programm that verifies this for me?

Also, please see the boards specs below:

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-9401( also known as PCG-630). It has a AMD K6-2+ processor. VGA is a trident Corei7. This is my first time using linux. I installed Xorg with the trident driver. I'm trying to follow the instruction on installing the graphics http://www.slitaz.org/en/doc/handbook/x-window.html. But i can't get it to Console mode. I restarted the computer without opening any applications and windows, and pressed ctrl-alt-del. Didn't do anything. I have pretty good experience with windows machines. Thank you.

Hello!

I'm trying to configure SliTaz to work as a thin-client OS and I need it run a rdesktop session at startup. I've installed rdesktop successfully and have enabled persistence so that I can make changes and such to SliTaz on my USB flash drive. I thought I could just go to menu > preferences > Auto start applications and make my entry there like I would type in the command line. But this doesn't seem to work.

How would I go about doing this? I'm still kind of new to Linux but I think I understand most things. Any help would be appreciated :-)

Sorry, I'm tired of googling for nothing. This is stupid. Where's a proper good manual about network management?
Is there somewhere a proper guide STEP BY STEP to:
-find out if your network card is supported by the system and has been detected. Name and information about
that card.
-Turn on that card and get and introduce the ISP information, if is not able to do it automatically.
-Change the default network manager of the Linux distribution and use another WITHOUT internet access (obviously).
-Etc.???

Please, STEP BY STEP. I'm unable to use Internet with Slitaz, and that should be the FIRST THING a linux distribution should manage.
"Network Manager" has always worked great for me, WIFI and 3G. I don't understand why the distributions don't give it with WICD and the others, and we would be able to choose. It's so heavy??? C'mon!

We are talking about Internet access!

I have no conexion to Internet, and I have given up about that, so dont say get-install anything...

Hi,
is there a place from I can download the configuration file of the SliTaz Stable 3.0 / Cooking version kernel?
Also, if anybony knows this, is the gzip and lzma squashfs support compiled into SliTaz kernel? I can see that there are some kernel modules available for download on the Packages site. I'm asking because I can't boot the LiveUSB if I use the gzip/lzma filesystem compression method (it works flawlessly if I use the "none" option).

Cannot mount samba-share at boot-time

Hi all

I have two linux machines at home and with the command

mount.cifs //192.168.1.200/Musik /media/Musik -o username
=Killerkaninchen

I got them linked.
Now I wanted to have this done at boot time, so I edited the fstab:

//192.168.1.200/Musik /media/Musik mount.cifs credentials=/home/Killerkaninchen/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8 0 0

With this I get the following error:

mount: mounting //192.168.1.200/Musik on /media/Musik failed: No such device

and with cifs instead of mount.cifs:

Mounting the DFS root for domain not implemented yet
mount error: can not change directory into mount target credentials=/home/Killerkaninchen/.smbcredentials,iocharset=utf8,ip=192.168.1.200

I think I installed all samba related packages...
What must I write down in the fstab?

Installing driver for better screen resolution

The resolution wasn't right for my screen when I was using the Live_CD OR after I installed to hdd. I tried editting the xorg.conf file and that only messed up my system and I had to reinstall. I finally found something that works so I am going to share with everyone else because I am sure everyone else is just as frustrated as I was. I am not sure if this will work while running the live cd because I did this after I installed to hdd. After you log in and you see your desktop, open up a terminal. Once you have the terminal open type in "su" and then "password" (without the quotations) to become root. After you have become "root", type in "tazx". That should bring up a window that has three options, you want the first option. It should say something like install or reinstall xorg driver or something. After you pick that option, it should bring up another window with list of graphics cards drivers. Go through the list and find your driver, you will need to know what kind of graphics card or chip that is in your computer. Once you select your driver it should install it and your done. Now if your screen does like mine did then it will go very dark but still barely visible. Exit out of terminal and click the little spider menu down at the bottom left. Go to log out and then click restart x. Once "X" has restarted your new driver should be loaded and your resolution should be better. If it is NOT better then repeat the process and try a different driver. After I restarted "X" and saw that my resolution was fixed I restarted my computer just to make sure it got saved. I hope that I explained this clearly enough but if I didn't, post a reply and I will repost the steps in a list type format. I hope this helped anyone having trouble with it because I know it was driving me crazy.

Hello,

I known that running entirely from ram is a main feature of Slitaz, but is it possible to have the file system on the hdd (or other storage device) as usual ?
I'm using Slitaz for it's lightness, but it would be better for me to have the file system on the main storage device.

Hi,

Came to know abt slitaz and decided to try it out and in the process encountered some issues so thought of checking here. Before i start, would like to say, it's a really amazing distro, what features it has in such a small size. So let me begin :-)

1. Package manager seems to be quite slow, quite surprised as the whole OS is blinding fast but package mgr seem to be taking its time, is that normal? I was connected using ethernet yet pkg search took a long time. Is it possible to have the search done on pressing enter instead of clicking on Packages/Description button?

2. Once the packages are found, it takes a long time before it comes to normal, till such time it appears hung.

3. Installed chrome but it didn't start when invoked, opera however worked so i guess it's a chrome issue.

4. Tried to use wireless but it failed to detect and it hung up forcing me to restart. Do i need to install anything else for wireless to work. Machine is a Thinkpad R-61 with Intel 3945 wireless.

If someone could advise on the above, it would be really helpful.

Slitaz base - stuck in read only file system

Does anyone have vmware tools installed for slitaz?

Was it difficult getting vmware tools to work on Slitaz? I've been trying and I think I need to install them because it appears as if slitaz isn't supporting any of the network adapters on a vsphere host. (e1000, vmxnet,flexible,vmxnet2,vmxnet3) ..

My main interest in Slitaz is the chance to use Wine with it, but searching in the appdatabase I found the package is not ready for Slitaz.
What's the simple way to get Wine WITHOUT internet connexion? The Package Manager is able to write a script and get the packages from another computer with Internet, as in Synaptic?

Or i have to use the Wok utility?

By the way, is working fine Wine in Slitaz?

Slitaz is really fast, I agree with all of you, but for newbies is not well documented (not enough, I mean). Google is a nightmare many times.

Anyone using masqmail? I'm trying to use it as a relay using mail_host in a route file.

Backup Slitaz

Is there a way to backup slitaz and all settings?
Slitaz is installed on my HDD,and the settings are almost perfect booting, modules,programs etc. Im about play with some settings and i have had situations where i was unable to figure out how to get back to the original settings for hrs.
Maybe a program like apples time machine(backup utility).

I would like to know how i can put all the available drivers in Slitaz repositories on an USB
and a mean to modify Slitaz in the aim to have it linking to that usb. So during boot, drivers can be installed

They are ext4 partitions, and I'm using Slitaz 3.0. When I use a USB key it mounts it automatically, but my hard drive partitions are out of reach for me.

All of the current .tazpkg's do not have NDISWRAPPER support enabled. I've tried to use tazwok and to manually compile wpa_supplicant to no avail. Not sure what exactly I'm doing wrong. Could someone please compile wpa_supplicant w/ support for NDISWRAPPER. plz. plz.

Resolution not detected, slow from HDD

Hi,

I'm really enjoying SliTaz, it's the only distro I've tried that I've noticeably seen improved speed and responsiveness from the majority, however, I've encountered one or two small niggles:

My resolution is not available to select. I followed some instructions I found (thanks seawolf) about using screen=1024x600x24 (my res and depth), which did work when booting to the live CD and when booting into the HDD for the first time, but now it completely ignores it and goes into what looks like 800x600 (that's the highest one that it detects). Is there some way to force it to use 1024x600, or to get it to detect it, or some way to make screen=1024x600x24 work again?

Also, I've noticed that SliTaz runs much faster from the live medium than when I install it to my HDD. I assume this is because when booting from the live environment it loads to RAM, but when I install it to my HDD it doesn't. Is there some way to get it to load to RAM on a HDD install?

hello im having trouble with understanding linux right now. im brand new to it and just put slitaz on a dvd-rom and gave it a go about an hour ago, and its completely different from what im used to. i've tried out a few things, such as browsing folders on my windows drive, playing music, and browsing the internet (which im doing right now).
i am quite experienced with windows, but ive just never heard any bad things about linux, so im trying it out. some things that confuse me are that to, for example, install a file, you apparently have to run source code...i'm just used to running a .exe file and letting it do all the work.
i like it so far, but just some of the mechanics confuse me a bit, such as how to run linux under the "root" user. if anybody could give me a few pointers on how this all works, or otherwise point me to some sort of documentation, i'd be very greatful.

Hello, my name is John, and first of all I wish to thank for your comments and help.
The title says it all, I need to make work my KORG nanoKEY inside Slitaz 3.0 stable, I have trouble with Java midi classes and the MuSE program, they simply don't detect the keyboard, although it was detected as it shows the lsusb command in its output (the system sees it, the programs don't).
I added my normal user to the root group, to have administrative privileges, to prevent permission problems.

Adding Xkill to panel and Synaptic Configuration

Hi,
I downloaded xkill and can access xkill from the terminal. I want to have xkill icon on my panel like puppy linux. so i just click on it and click the application and it kills the app.

Why is it that when you download some applications it does not appear in the application menu( internet, prefences etc). How can i edit it to appear there. i can only run the application from the run command. I am looking for file that edits the menu arrangement and add stuff to it.

I am trying to configure 2 finger scrolling using the synaptic driver. But got lost. i have downloaded the Xorg-xf86-(synaptic driver). I can not find the Xorg file in /etc/X11.

Thanks for your help. I have been battling with this for quite some hours and hopefully someone can help me out.

Does it make sense to compress a rootfs.gz to a 30MB file, if at each boot time the file is extract ?
It's just a waste of time at boot. Why the default format is not the uncompress one ? For sure , the 100mb's hard drive is over for long time, no ?

For the lowRam version I see the advantage (keep it compressed in RAM), but not for the default version

Conversion lacks

There are many programs in SliTaz can work only with UTF-8, but they designed to work with many encodings. There are LeafPad, Beaver, Midori, Poedit and Claws Mail. I received some emails in other than UTF-8 encodings, there is Cyrillic windows-1251 and KOI-8R. I get only underscores (_) instead of cyrillic symbols in Claws Mail. Function in menu View - Encoding don't work. I want to open this email's file in Firefox, set correct encoding and read text. But, Firefox is thing-in-itself.

Maybe the problem with encoding in all SliTaz programs have common roots? Maybe it lacks a global library for conversion?

power off in enlightenment with slitaz 3

I am using slitaz 3 with the enlightenment pam package. When I use the desktop system menu to power off, the computer hangs at system halted. If I type poweroff in a terminal it powers off no problem. Where should I start looking to fix the problem.
