Problem with Windows Manager

Hello,

I'm pretty new to Slitaz so forgive this basic question!:)

Having problems every time I open a new window, there is no toolbar up the top and all windows start and lock themselves to the top left hand corner, consequently I cannot view more than one at a time.

I am running kernel 2.6.30.6-slitaz (i686), its also a version of slitaz with aircrack integrated. In system info in the Desktop Environment column it says Windows manager unknown.

any help would be greatly appreciated and if theres any more info i can provide just let me know.

I'm forced to run a kernel <= 2.6.21. Any chance to get that going? Or are the obstacles too big, like e.g. the missing 'aufs'?

Hello all, I am in need of some serious help, and I think that this may need a complete re-install of SliTaz. I turned my computer off with the power button after getting stuck in a copy/paste thing from Midori. It happens pretty often to me but the side-effects are new. When I booted it again and logged on, I can no longer see anything other than the mouse-pointer. If i try to open a program via the right-click menu, it does not open. Any idea what this might be?

If I install the tazpkg of libdrm and replace the xorg.conf file; Xorg starts idle, without keyboard and without mouse.

Flash Player Install - Paste in Super User Mode

I'm trying to install flash player plugin into firefox.
I already downloaded "libflashplayer.so" and now I'm supposed to paste that into "/usr/lib/firefox*/plugins" to get it to work. But I don't have write access to that folder. What should I do? How can I elevate privileges on a paste or move command? (I'm new to Slitaz)

Is there a way to download a package along with all of it's dependencies?

Hi,

I just came across SliTaz and decided to give it a try and revive my older Dell Latitude D400.

The wireless networking doesn't seem to work. I tried to play around with the wireless manager but it seems to hang.

My questions are:
1) Is there a hardware compatibility page here I can find whether my hardware will work?
2) Did anyone else have a problem with a wireless Broadcom bcm 4309 card and how would I solve it?

I seemingly could successfully hibernate my system then when i restarted it, it booted normally
Trying to hibernate it again nothing happens so i suspect that the swap partition has been locked and is not used anymore... how am i supposed to awake an hibernated system ?

Making Kismet, laptop power settings

Hey all,
I went looking for a more lightweight alternative to Debian or Ubuntu for my laptop (Mostly for kismet and the like). I came across Slitaz, and it has been PERFECT. Except for a few minor thing -
After much searching I found the equivalent of build-essential. Now compiling works for the most part, but I'm having trouble compiling kismet. The package in the repo isn't built with he suidinstall option, and I'm after the bleeding edge version.
Problems:
-I need to add my self to the kismet group. I made the group, but how can I add myself to the group without being told to log off? I tried logging in as root to it, but I was still told that that user was logged in. I believe at this stage it's the only kismet problem I'm having.

Other issues I'm having:
-How can I get Slitaz playing nice with my laptop? When I close the lid, the screen goes black. Good. But when I open it, the only way to get anywhere is to hold the power button for 10 seconds and turn it back on. I can't find any laptop settings or any packages in the repo that will help me out here.

One of the things I thought I would not get to work was wireless networking. I use the integrated ipw2200 to connect to my LAN but my external rtl8187 for monitor mode and sniffing, with its antenna. The GUI tools provided with Slitaz are the best I've ever used in linux. They're at the perfect level of noob-friendly and complexity. Ubuntu was far to dumbed down. Fantastic! :)

I'd really like some help with these issues though :)

startx - FATAL SERVER ERROR? no screens found

hi, just booted slitaz (wanting to install to my netbook so im booting off a usb)

login with root and root

typed startx to start graphical session and i get a huge error message complaining about no screens found with a bunch of lines saying fatal IO error 104 connection reset by peer on X server "localhost :0.0"

what should i do?

Keyboard not working

operating the latest slitaz cooking version shows a strange behaviour on my eeePC. During the boot screen is shown the keyboard is working, but together with the graphical interface the keyboard is not working anymore. Operating the same system on my Notebook does not show this behaviour. Does anyone have an idea regarding the cause?

Wow! Slitaz is so lean and fast! The liveCD (3.0) sees all my hardware and boots up quick. It was pretty easy getting online with pppoe-setup and making some small changes with the package manager. So far, I'm very favorably impressed with Slitaz Linux 3.0!

A couple of questions, though: /etc/resolv.conf and /etc/ppp/resolv.conf lose their configuration each time I go off my DSL connection (pppoe-stop); what's up with that, and how can I get the configuration to persist during a session? Also, I'm not sure of some of the terminology regarding installation; would a Frugal install give a place to store changes I've made during a session and still boot to RAM? Am I correct that the running from RAM option disappears with HDD install?

Oh, and could I drop a preferred xorg.conf file from another distro (Brogdan R's excellent Nimblex 2008) into Slitaz and that configuration be recognized?

Prroblem with Midori

Hi. I'm new to the forum. I have a laptop Acer extensa with Slitaz 3.0. In this version, the Midori browser when I'm using any of the Yahoo.com submenu, like "open quick view" for Mail, Finance, etc.. It hangs forever. When I tried the new Nov 4 release, then, the mouse pointer became very hard to control. Only by pressing the left click botton down all the time, I had some control of the mouse. Shall I report this to Midori or can you help me somehow?
Also, How can I configure the mouse using Slitaz?

Hello, I'm starting this discussion to see if any wants to help start a light_slitaz student movement for compiling programs of this category and other stuff like that. Also to get input from the people and see what they would like in such a distro. Some beginning ideas for college_light are:

1. A base system with:
xvesa, iptables [firewall], get-flash-plugin, abiword [word processor], gnumeric [spreadsheet], epdfview [until evince is finished], pidgin [chat client], sylpheed [e-mail maneger] =>
-> alsa [music player], vlc [movie player], transmission [torrent downloader], consonance [music maneger], and maybe urlgfe [download maneger].
Though as you may notice ARES downloader can do from -> on, i consider that some should do a slitaz mod of ares in order to add the best fetures of ->, and eliminate the web browser, add secure (encrypted) file transfer among users, etc. Also optimize for making an official .tazpkg.

2. Adding software like:
-geda and electonic simulatores
-kalzium (with out the 3D) [I know about gperiodic and chemtool, but they dont resolve chemic equc.]
-a light flow diagram maker [dia is a very powerful but has to many things most people wont use],
-A light 2D graphing calculator that can resolve matrices like derive.
-A light power point replacement [not sure if scribus is light or any good for presentations haven't tested].
-etc.

3. Choose a line of computers (netbooks = asus, acer,what ever) to be the default used machines for high school and/or college students with slitaz so that we may add complete support and optimization.

4. As for games, slitaz has a few and even emulators. For more emu's visit http://www.trixarian.za.net/?Projects:SliTaz .

resolv.conf permissions change upon disconnecting from wvdial [SOLVED]

I noticed that after everytime I use wvdial to connect to the Internet through a 3G dongle, any attempts to connect to the Internet thereafter would fail. After looking around a bit, I realized that I could connect as a root, however a normal user could not.

more /etc/resolv.conf

results in a 'permission denied' error. If I manually enable 'read' for group as well as other users (root permissions do not change), then I can connect again.

Turns out everything is fine till the point wvdial establishes connection. You can browse, et al. When you hit CTRL+C on wvdial to disconnect, permissions for resolv.conf changes to root(rwx) and nothing for everyone else.

I did not see this problem with stable (I'm using the latest cooking).

Minor issues with new cooking

Ok, so I installed the latest cooking. 'Looks' really awesome.

1. New user creation still has the bug, does not copy all the necessary files from skel properly. Well, /etc/skel is still missing a bunch of files. Adding the necessary files to /etc/skel and then creating a new user results in the good old "failed to execute login command". Turns out instead of copying the contents of /etc/skel to /home/newuser, it actually creates a new folder /home/newuser/skel and copies the contents there. Fixing that solves the issues.
2. My laptop's touchpad supported 'tapping' for left-click on stable, and that's no longer working on cooking. Can't seem to figure out where to activate it, if that is even possible.
3. I removed xterm and replaced it with sakura. But when I try to run sakura as a non-root user, the terminal window launches but does not get to the prompt, just hangs with a blank window. Runs fine as root. Xterm runs fine as non-root (I will try another reinstall just to see if this was caused by me messing around with issue #1).
4. Frequent "(process:2312): Gtk-WARNING **: Locale not supported by C library. Using the fallback 'C' locale." errors when running applications from terminal.
5. tazpkg get-install app throws the following warnings:

Hello!

I've got 2 problems with mi slitaz 3.0 stable install;
I added an AKE usb 2.0 cardbus to a Dell Latitude c600. It works, but it's working slowly, similar to usb 1.1.
lspci lists 3 controllers, 2 with usb 1.1 and 1 with usb 2.0. I don't know how to copy and paste from terminal.

I would also like to update midori to the lastest version. The package for cooking doesn't work, install but nothing happens when I click.

Cooking linux 2.6.30.6 questions

I am trying to cook the v4l-dvb.tazpkg with an extra driver (the Margi DVD to Go driver)but I need to recook the original linux 2.6.30.6 tazpkg and need the"stuff" file that came with it in the wok. The wok currently has the linux 2.6.36 receipt and "stuff" file which I'am having problems trying to cook. So I thought the original would work better?
Any idea's where where I might download it?
Any suggestions how I can get around this?

Edit: I also need to know how to answer the questions during the "General Setup". I know it use's the config file to answer most of them but I don't like guessing on the others as it take so long to cook and then recook. I am fine with the way Slitaz 3.0 works and would like to know how they were answered for the live cd.

Hello all!

I'm trying to load some other software like rdesktop onto the liveusb I created using tazusb. I know to use writefs to save any changes that I make.

But if I were to use my LiveUSB on any other system than the one I created it on, I can't get network access and I have login issues (can't login as tux, just root). I want to create a bootable usb drive that works on any computer that I use it on and not just the one that I created it on. I'm assuming tazusb writefs saves any and all configuration stuff that is specific to the computer that you're working on. I really just want to make a liveCD with a few extra programs than the default.

Any help is appreciated. Thank you.

[SOLVED] Slitaz in Polish - keyboard and spell check problems.

Slitaz is excellent distro. Simply the best for older thinkpads.
The only issue I have with this great OS is my locale.
First of all if someone like me uses polish programmers keyboard, and we all in Poland use that layout, he/she should edit as superuser the file

# nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf

and change the line in section "InputDevice"

Option      "XkbLayout" "pl2"

Option      "XkbLayout" "pl"

On next log-in you will have all polish letters, even in terminal.
This method works only on stable 3.0. On cooking change:
# nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-Keyboard.conf
XkbLayout to pl

The second problem is polish spell checking. I created a receipt with aid of english aspell for building polish aspell dictionary.

white screen invade my desktop

this time i hv problem with slitaz, relating to the screen....
somehow this white area on my left and top of my screen appear each time im using slitaz... my cursor can reach that white area, but not my desktop, including wallpaper or any windows.... which make my workspace become smaller on the screen.

im dual boot with other os such as ubuntu, but the screen is ok, and can be use normally. except for slitaz

any solution? plz help, ive been using slitaz for more than 2 years

Have all my memory recognized
Can't seem to make the box do it. I have two 128MB sticks, but they're PC133, not PC66 like the slots seem to want. I've tried various boot flags, but they don't seem to make a difference. Does anybody have an idea (or some PC66 128MB sticks lying around)?

screen resolution

have managed to install slitaz on an old IBM thinkpad.
The problem I am having is that I cannot set the correct screen resolution.

At the moment slitaz displays using about 60% of the available screen centered in the middle with black unusable borders for the rest of the screen.

How can I set it to use the full screen using a screen resolution 1280x1024

onboard video is SMI LynxEM4
