How to shutdown the system in terminal?
  • JerryJerry March 2010
There is no 'shutdown' and command 'halt' will not turn off the power.
  • mojomojo March 2010
    poweroff
    to turn off power
    and
    reboot
    to reboot

  • babaorumbabaorum March 2010
or halt or shutdown (many options available: real shutdown, immediately or later, reboot...).

    or try
    root@slitaz:~# shutdown
    sh: shutdown: not found

    HALT(8) Linux System Administrator's Manual HALT(8)

    NAME
halt, reboot, poweroff - stop the system.

    SYNOPSIS
    /sbin/halt [-n] [-w] [-d] [-f] [-i] [-p] [-h]
    /sbin/reboot [-n] [-w] [-d] [-f] [-i]
    /sbin/poweroff [-n] [-w] [-d] [-f] [-i] [-h]

    DESCRIPTION
Halt notes that the system is being brought down in the file
/var/log/wtmp, and then either tells the kernel to halt, reboot or
    power-off the system.

If halt or reboot is called when the system is not in runlevel 0 or 6,
in other words when it's running normally, shutdown will be invoked
instead (with the -h or -r flag). For more info see the shutdown(8)
    manpage.

The rest of this manpage describes the behaviour in runlevels 0 and 6,
that is when the systems shutdown scripts are being run.

    OPTIONS
-n Don't sync before reboot or halt.

-w Don't actually reboot or halt but only write the wtmp record (in
    the /var/log/wtmp file).

-d Don't write the wtmp record. The -n flag implies -d.

Halt DO turn off the power, I'm using it since forever, Slitaz or other distros. You may have a problem with it.
    "shutdown" is a mistake indeed.
    Mojo's suggestions are good.

    @ Mojo :
but didn't bother to read that

Please may consider that every one can just forget or make a mistake... I did read this. Just a humain thing, a mistake... you know ?
Thanks for being a little bit more tolerant w/ other contributors.
I'm not pretending being Nix God or anything related. I'm only trying to help.

    Hello Jerry,

I use "halt now" on Slitaz, as root of course (I'm not sure that "halt" alone works on it, I should try). It shuts down the system, writes the usual messages, finishing by "System will halt now" or something like that, and... hangs on. I still have to press the on/off button to perform the final step of extinction. On the other hand, "reboot" indeed reboots the computer, and shutting down my computer with the usual box in Slitaz works like charm.

Oh, fascinating mysteries of computer science...

    LuX.

    "Halt" command doesn't power off.
It closes Slitaz and powers down the hard drive but does not stop power to system.
    Ububtu does tho' :(

The 'poweroff' command works, even as a normal user. I just ran it on v3 from the terminal fine.

All these commands are from BusyBox which, like many others, are different than standard distros. That's why the man page is available on the Internet or from other distros. Running 'poweroff --help' or 'halt --help' shows this.
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
I didn't try "poweroff" only "halt" _but_ I did try "Shutdown Computer" from the GUI menu and it did work.
So. What's the difference between "halt" and "poweroff"?
  • seawolfseawolf March 2010
Poweroff is only "halt -p" really, but the crappy BusyBox doesn't understand the -p flag, thus only the other works. The three utilities are normally all together, but under BB their not quite. That's how I understand it, anyways.

Another reason I immediately install the originals over BB!
