No localhost!! :-((
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
    Slitaz cooking 2
    attempt to connect : http://localhost:631
    "problem loading page"
I thought a web server is built in?
    Something I need to install?
  • erniaernia March 2010
usually at localhost:631 listens the cups server:
    http://www.cups.org/
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
    Yes, OK.
But I cannot connect to localhost via Shiretoko.

    I can ping 127.0.0.1 OK

    I can ping localhost OK

But PHP, MySQL, etc., need localhost (which just may be OK) but without it I cannot set up a printer :-((
  • erniaernia March 2010
i think that if you can ping localhost it means that localhost is where it should be ...
maybe you miss to install cups or to start the cups server?
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
Maybe you're right, ernia. So I tried to install cups but no change.
However I did note in passing a message about missing "cups.lst" or similar.
    Is this a known issue?
  • erniaernia March 2010
i'm just a slitaz newbye and i'm not interested in cups.
    tazpkg get-install cups

    does not works?
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
No, ernia. tazpkg get-install cups --force FAILS:

did you answer yes at the prompts
Install all missing dependencies (y/N) ?
? The default answer should be N so if you just press enter you did non install some required dependencies.
    What's the output of
    tail /var/log/cups/errors.log
    ?
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
    Install doesn't ask about dependencies.
    ******** /var/log/cups/errors.log *********
    ...No such file or directory
    ****************************
/var/log/cups .. is empty (no files)

    _and_
    ps -A | grep cups
    doesn't show cups
    _but_
    ps -A | grep cups*
does show "cups_install_log" for some reason.
  • erniaernia March 2010
I can't help you, i've tried with a clean slitaz 2.0 and all works well.
  • kultexkultex March 2010
    which iso are you using?
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
    Latest Slitaz cooker.
Not on machine at pres - in transit to Mongolia -work :-((
  • kultexkultex March 2010
I tested it on the latest cooking and had no problems -

    did you read http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/comment/1455/#Comment_1455 ?

did you add tux and root to lp?

    addgroup tux lp
    addgroup root lp

    did you start cups?

    /etc/init.d/cupsd start
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
    (been working away) ..

addgroup: unknown user tux (did you mean myself?)

    Starting cups daemon: Cupsd... [Failed]
    Child exited on signal 11!

I did read the link you indicated but the guy could load CUPS but had a problem afterwards.

I'll swap his problem for mine :)
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
I posed this question on linuxquestions.org even though they don't have a SLITAZ section :-((
The suggestion was to "configure CUPS".
    Nice but howto?
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
Ummm. Maybe it's back to Ubuntu then?
Shame cos' I DO like SLITAZ :)
  • seawolfseawolf March 2010
Have you looked at the CUPS configuration files? It may be failing to start because it is unable to parse the config file or it is not correctly set up. I'm sure amongst the CUPS docs on the web there will be some kind of tutorial or sample file.

As I don't have a printer, perhaps someone with a working CUPS could paste their config to pastebin for you to use/look at.
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
I googled all the cups.conf, etc., I could find but changed nothing. So I installed strace and looked at the output: (well, part of)

which looks like a bunch of dependencies missing?

Note there is no prompt regarding depends - all I see is a tick box with "auto install depends" and "get-install" which suggests depends are automatically installed.
  • SampiSampi March 2010
You should be going to port 80, not port 631, if you are using the _web_ server: http://localhost/ or http://127.0.0.1/

If you still are getting an error, try installing lighttpd:
    tazpkg get-install lighttpd

If it says something about it already being installed, launch it:
    /etc/init.d/lighttpd start
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
OK. I installed lighttpd and ps shows it running.

http://localhost:80 just give me an index page for lighttpd (English & French).

http://localhost:631 still can't connect so I still have no ability to install a printer, pluggd in or not.

/etc/init.d/cupsd start still gives me the Child 11! error.
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
Oh, BTW. I cleaned the hard drive and re-installed Slitaz. No change.
    Sigh.
  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
Also how do I find out what version of programs ARE installed?

dpkg runs but there is no cache.

I'm trying to check if needed depends are installed.
  • erniaernia March 2010
just installed in the latest cooking and it works.
    root@slitaz:/home/tux# tazpkg get-install cups

    cups (1.4.2) is installed.

and cups is listening on 127.0.0.1:631 as usual.
you can find the list of packages i've installed here:
    http://rapidshare.com/files/368752131/installedtazpkglist.html
try to diff with the one you get with "tazpkg list", so you can check if i have installed something you don't have
i don't have the files of your strace output in my system

  • fopeteslfopetesl March 2010
    Ah! It seems:
    ..# tazpkg remove cups > remove.cups.list 2>&1
does not remove ALL the previously installed packages though it does prompt to replace altered files. the install.list looks like this:
    # cat remove.cups.list

The following packages have been modified by cups :
    busybox
    Remove cups (1.4.2) ?
    Please confirm uninstallation (y/N) :
    Removing : cups
    =====================================
    Stopping cups deamon: Cupsd... Terminated
Removing all files installed... [ OK ]
Removing package receipt... [ OK ]
Reinstall packages modified by cups (y/N) ?

    I said "yes" here.

Is there any way to remove ALL the cups install files?

If anyone is interested there's a developing thread on this subject here:
    http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?p=3920124
  • teotl31teotl31 April 2010
You have firewall? because if you have firewall maybe is your problem you need add rules about localhost
  • fopeteslfopetesl April 2010
    No firewall.
cups runs OK on alternative mobo with same HDD.
  • erniaernia April 2010
so it could be related to processor or graphic card, can you tell us exactly the brand and model of both motherboards and which is the working one?
  • rutgerrutger September 2010
I have the same problem on my computer. When i install cups on my normal computer than it works. When i install it on my 'microclient sr' it doesnot work. I get the same error message the Child 11! error.
