Mount ntfs partition using fstab no success, is it possible?
  • websterwebster December 2009
Cann't i automatically mount partition at boot time using fstab(just like other linuxes)
Iam putting this in the fstab :

    "/dev/sda1 /media/data ntfs-3g defaults 0 0"

but no success, but i can mount using mountbox

    I am sure it works! In my fstab I write /dev/sda1 /media/data ntfs-3g user,rw,auto 0 0
You have to check first: that the directory /data exists and that it is read/write fur user
otherwise you can check the boot-logfile (in var/log/boot.log) first and see wether it was mounted correctly or wether you got an error.Try as root wether you can find any content in /media/data and wether you can write something into it.

webster what kind of install do you have ?
Unless you have a conventional hard drive install or add home=
to bootcode on a frugal hard drive install and you saved the filesystem when you log out your fstab changes will not survive a reboot. Verify your fstab entry works before you shutdown as root mount -a

what i do is add the command ntfs-3g -o force /dev/sda1 /media/data to a file winmount.sh make it executable and place it in /etc/init.d/

    Hey,
I just installed Slitaz 2.0 on one machine here. Works fine except i cannot mount the ntfs partition. Neither with the mount tool nor manually.
Using PCMAN I get an error that i saw in other posts
    Erreur org.freedesktop.Hal.Device.Volume.UnknownFailure (twice)

    Any idea ?
    Thanks

I just add the following line to /etc/rcS.conf
    mount /dev/hda1 /media/winxp

Just edit how you want it mounted.

Might not be the way to do it but I have always automounted that way.

when i type this command manually it says "invalid argument".
When adding it to etc!rcS.conf it says the same at boot time
And when i type the command from a root shell: mount -t ntfs-3g /dev/hda1 /media/winxp
it says nothing but the partition is not mounted
I also tried a line in /etc/fstab with
    /dev/hda1 /mnt/harddisk ntfs-3g user,rw,auto 0 0

    and still nothing happends

    /mnt/harddisk and /media/winxp directories exist

anything obvious i am missing here ???

(not sure what i may need here, but if i type modprobe -l | grep fuse
or modprobe -l | grep ntfs
then in both case it does not return anything. Could there be a problem with ntfs-3g not installed properly ??)

    thanks

I found the solution to that problem
The XP session had been put to hibernate
I am guessing that as a protection linux refused to mount the partitition.
Once the XP session has been shutdown properly, i could mount the ntfs partition.

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Glad you got it worked out. Maybe your response will help someone who has a similar problem one day. Thanks for sharing

    yes,
I just wish there would be some sort of smarter system message when failing...
I will go on the ntfs-3g site an make a suggestion....

I was having the same problem today. Checked this forum and found the answer - a hibernating windows partition won't mount! The error message is obscure (no such device), but it basically means you have to shut down your windows partition before you can mount it in Slitaz.

Thanks for this oldish thread, I can stop tearing out my remaining hair...
