USB Install DIrectly (No LiveCD)?
  • DroneDrone December 2010
Hi, I'm showing SliTaz to a friend right now. He asks... Is it possible to install a fresh SliTaz 3.0 Stable from download directly to a USB stick? I can't find the answer easily (looked in the docs etc.) I normally do it with Tazusb from a booted LiveCD. But these netbooks we're on right now have no CD-RW drive available. Maybe this is a syslinux vs. isolinux issue? Both of our netbooks right now are running WinXP. So we want to go from .iso to USB stick directly in WinXP (?) and (hopefully preserve the FATx format on the USB stick). Is this possible?

    Regards, David

it's as easy as copying the contents of the .ISO to the root of the main partition on the usb disk. then to make slitaz bootable, you have to manually install and configure a bootmanager.

    here is my detailed tutorial.

@tikbalang, Thanks for the link to your thread. I've already considered the likes of grub4dos and unetbootin. I was hoping for a solution much like Slax has where you just download a USB-ready image and then install directly to USB stick.

    http://www.slax.org/documentation.php

    In-particular:

Slax distribution - Slax for USB...

    http://www.slax.org/documentation_install_slax.php

This seems to do a syslinux install to USB via a .bat file in Windows.

But Slax it seems is now (as of my post date) in a stop-development state for an indefinite amount of time. (Not the first time this has happened with Slax, let's hope it comes back to active some day).

@Drone, If are looking to create a live-usb, it's pretty straightforward. There is a tazusb.exe for windows that you can simply point to an iso and it will create a live-usb for you. I'm not sure if it'll preserve the FAT format -- actually I don't remember.

I haven't used windows for a long time and now I can't seem to find tazusb.exe on the Slitaz website. I found a copy on ophcrack's website (check the installation instructions for windows, I think its the second bullet):

    http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/ophcrack/index.php?title=Frequently_Asked_Questions#New_instructions_.28LiveCD_version_2.3.0_and_newer.29

I haven't verified this copy so I cannot give any guarantees that its free of malware/spyware/viruses/wmds/etc. so please use with care :).

@Drone , everyone gets the error box on occasion
It's human nature to assume an error in response to an action means the action failed and you should repeat the action.
In this case the assumption is wrong.
Don't click Post Comment again until you have verified the post has failed by
closing out the error box and clicking refresh in your browser.
