Automated Hardware Setup (printer, scanner, camera etc)
  • jozeejozee March 2010
    Hi all,

This work extends the tazhw tool to make setting up devices like
printer or scanner easier. Please help to test it. More details:
    http://labs.slitaz.org/projects/show/setup

First, you must have an upgraded system (atleast udev). Then, simply
install the package and open the tazhw box. Click on a device and
    follow the prompts.
OR simply type "tazhw setup [device]". More details here:
    http://labs.slitaz.org/wiki/setup

Parallel port printers and ati graphic card are supported but not tested.
If you do have these, I really need your help to test them.

EDIT: For nvidia and ati, I assume you have xorg. xorg procedure is there but not yet enabled. However, if you have Xvesa, you can stop slim and call "tazhw setup xorg" to configure. Then, you can rerun nvidia or ati setup.

    Hi jozee
I really like your idea and tried it, but it didn't work for me.
So here is what I tried first: installed the drivers for my ati/sapphire x1950xt with your tazhw-tool-extention, but I did't feel any difference and I can't open the Catalyst Control Center (it says that there are no installed ati-drivers).

Secondly: tried to install a printer (HP-LaserJet-1000) with the Tazhw-extention, but that didn't work either.

I didn't actually expect that it would be working fine "out of the box", but I'm sad anyways because it would've been so nice and easy :).

    @nik :
please explain further what didn't work for you:
    tazhw setup printer

I have tested on few usb HP printers and scanners. It all works fine for me. For printer, you need to select the identified printer.

ATI is not tested but nvidia (and free nv) drivers are tested.

We really want to just work out of the box. If you can explain your problem with outputs, I can correct the bugs.

EDIT: Oh, for hp printers, please select "Confirm Suggested" so that script prompts for installing "hplip"
     tazhw setup printer --confirm

EDIT2: For non-free catalyst ati drivers, please post the output of
     tazhw setup ati --non-free

    hi jozee
I can't explain the hp-printer problem right now. I'll do that later!
When I type in 'tazhw setup ati --non-free'
    I get the following:

    aticonfig: No supported adapters detected
Checking if ati catalyst is working ...
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib: extension "GLX" missing on display ":0.0".
    Segmentation fault

In my opininon that looks like slitaz (//tazhw) is not detecting my Radeon x1950xt as a 'supported adapter'.

Great work ! It *prolly* did fine w/ my Canon LaserShot LBP-1120 USB printer ("prolly" because it was recognized but I couldn't test it "live" then, it seems this printer does not work anymore since a few dats, whatever OS I try to make it print on)

It was correctly named, choosable, and printer spoolers are all available (guten..., foomatix, etc) (I chose to install all of them).

Thanks ! If I get my printer repaired, I will follow on giving some testing back.

People with ATI graphics card and/or parallel printer, please test the new tazhw. I want to push this to repos for stable release.
