cooking user and group oddity
  • erniaernia December 2010
i was having permission troubles moving files between my 3.0 install and my cooking install.
i think that the output of following comands can show the reason why:
    root@cooking:~# cat /etc/group
    root:x:0:
    lp:x:10:
    audio:x:20:fabio
    nogroup:x:99:
    www:x:80:
    messagebus:x:25:
    cdrom:x:1000:
    dialout:x:1001:
    disk:x:1002:
    floppy:x:1003:
    kmem:x:1004:
    tape:x:1005:
    tty:x:1006:
    video:x:1007:
    haldaemon:x:26:
    fabio:x:1008:
    root@cooking:~# cat /etc/passwd
    root:x:0:0:Root Administrator:/root:/bin/sh
    nobody:x:99:99:Unprivileged User:/dev/null:/bin/false
    www:x:80:80:Web Server User:/var/www:/bin/false
    messagebus:x:25:25:DBUS Daemon User:/dev/null:/bin/false
    haldaemon:x:26:26:HAL Daemon User:/dev/null:/bin/false
    fabio:x:1008:1008:Linux User,,,:/home/fabio:/bin/sh

it seems that some groups get gid higher than 1000, so my only user fabio get id 1008 instead of the more reasonable 1000, which usually is the default for the first unprivileged user in a linux system.
would it be possible to correct this?
