webcam support in slitaz: Howto
  • jozeejozee November 2009
    Hi all,

Erjo and I are trying to get the full webcam support in slitaz. Slitaz, previously, provided out of box support to some of the webcams (uvcvideo and gspca_main)

    Download/install the following pkgs from

    1) linux-video pkg (having many more webcams support e.g. philips, logitech) (I will add this to repos soon)
    2) libv4l pkg (video 4 linux 1 and 2 support extra libs) (now in repos)

    Then, plugin your webcam
    tazhw detect-usb

/dev/video0 should be created. Add yourself to "video" group if not done already.

    For skype:

    export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/
    skype &

(if you don't do LD_PRELOAD, skype will crash when video starts)

You should then be able to see your webcam in skype:
    OPTIONS->Video device-> Usb camera (/dev/video0)
Press "Test" and you should see a live image.

    For mplayer:

download mplayer-svn based with tv, v4l enabled (
     export LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/
    mplayer tv:// -tv driver=v4l2:width=320:height=240:device=/dev/video0 -vo x11

Hope it works for you too. Let us know. We can then put this in wiki.

    === Edit: Troubleshooting: ====
if there is any problem in detecting your webcamera, do this
    modprobe correct_module

You can use lsusb (usbutils pkg) helps to find your webcamera: e.g., Bus 007 Device 003: ID 0c45:613b Microdia Win2 PC Camera. Then, to find the correct module, do google search, e.g., for gspca-based webcams, refer here:

Also tazhw can help you to detect and load the right kernel module for your Webcam.
    # tazhw detect-usb

  • deadwaitdeadwait November 2009
lsusb is not found on install ( using latest cooking) and tazhw detect-usb does not detect my logitech cam.
any other ways to try ?
  • ErjoErjo November 2009
    You may install usbutils package.

    "How to" (
Instructions are updated as per above discussions.

@deadwait : tazhw is fixed now ( Can you download the latest tazhw and try again. Can you also check what logitech-cam module you need. and see if its in linux-video pkg.

I downloaded and installed linux-video and lib4vl. But tazhw does not detect the webcam on my Dell Mini 9. lsusb returns the following:

Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 002: ID 064e:a118 Suyin Corp.
Bus 002 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 003 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 004 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0001 Linux Foundation 1.1 root hub
Bus 005 Device 002: ID 413c:02b0 Dell Computer Corp.

I cant tell which one is the webcam to modprobe? Please help. Thank you.

Also, if I try to detect the webcam using tazhw box, I get "ls /dev/video0: No such file or directory", followed by "Failed to setup webcam".

I don't know what webcam module does dell mini 9 has but i am guessing its uvcvideo. Can you do:

     modprobe uvcvideo
    # test webcam again using
    tazhw setup webcam

    Tazhw didn't work for me.
Lsusb showed webcam as ebla:2766 so I used uvcvideo.
Didn't test skype but mplayer worked perfectly.
Tazhw setup webcam didn't list webcam but it tested fine.
    Thanks Jozee, Erjo!

Like to see microdia included for my, lighting fast Gateway Lt3103u, as everything else is working great.
