[SOLVED] Wireless not working, broadcom bcm 4309 on Dell D400
  • YoavYoav November 2010
    Hi,

I just came across SliTaz and decided to give it a try and revive my older Dell Latitude D400.

The wireless networking doesn't seem to work. I tried to play around with the wireless manager but it seems to hang.

    My questions are:
    1) Is there a hardware compatibility page here I can find whether my hardware will work?
    2) Did anyone else have a problem with a wireless Broadcom bcm 4309 card and how would I solve it?

    Thanks,

    Yoav

whilst i dont have that wireless card, or any knowlegdge of the supported broadcom wireless cards. i would like to point out that, there is a broadcom wireless lan package available in the slitaz repositorys. i cannot tell you if you card is supported by that package. however i hope that telling you its there may be helpful in someway or another.

    the package is called "broadcom-wl-5.60.48.36_2.6.30.6.tazpkg."

typing "tazpkg search broadcom" into a terminal window shall display that information.

"tazpkg get-install broadcom-wl" should install that package automatically, however you will need to be connected to the internet first (do you have working ethernet?). since that package and its dependancies will be automatically downloaded by tazpkg manager.

    ***EDIT***
ok, i googled and the information does explicitly mention your EXACT chipset. http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

so my comment is probably pointless. however i do believe the package is worth a try since it involves the least amount of effort to setup and does have the BCM43xx module.

    ***EDIT2***
unfortunately, you wireless card currently ISNT supported by the package i mentioned and is unstable.

seems that currently NDISWAPPER might be the only way for you to go right now.

There is no list of hardware known to work with slitaz. Search with google with the hardware name and slitaz, linux , ubuntu, etc..

Anyone new to slitaz is going to have problems with wireless unless you search the forums and read the documentation. Slitaz requires installing the drivers (install linux-wireless.tazpkg)and firmware(get-firmware) if required to get wireless to work. You need a working ethernet connection for the get-firmware script to work,it's a pain to install the broadcom firmware without it. The drivers have been removed to shrink the iso size.

My Dell Inspirion E1505 has working built in BCM4311 wireless with minipci card.
    Is your wireless built-in,plug-in pcmcia card(install pcmciautils.tazpkg),or usb(install usbutils.tazpkg) ?

Follow my instructions on this thread:
    http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/comment/6372/#Comment_6372

Try the b43legacy first, if that doesn't work try b43, if that fails try broadcom-wl

    I use b43 , tried broadcom-wl which failed , ndiswrapper is broken.

    Mojo,

Thank for your direction. I followed the "wifi the easy way" and it worked but then the wireless disappeared after restart. I then followed the suggestions in the post you linked and edited the "rcS.conf" and "networks.conf" and it works fine now.

I ended up using the b43 module.

    Thank you!
