64-bit Slitaz: is it even necessary?
  • avamkavamk October 2010
Has a 64-bit Slitaz ever been considered? Considering it being meant for computers that could be old and with little memory, 64-bit might not help. Just curious, though.

Yes, SliTaz is at it's very heart a Linux and one of the major selling points of it is that it runs on any system. SliTaz even has SMP support built into it meaning it makes use of the multiple cores in your CPU or even multiple CPUs if avaliable. All this means is that Slitaz isn't just made for Old Computers, but that it should run just as well on machines made within the last year, if not current machines.

The thing about SliTaz is that it's designed to be uber lightweight, while leaving as much of your resources avaliable for other stuff. To a coder this is a dream because fast compiling takes up a lot of processing power, so a top heavy GUI enviroment is more a pain than a help. This is also uber helpful if your running something like a netbook that doesn't have all that much resources to begin with.

That said, we have to admit that some of the support provided by SliTaz needs some work... but if it adapts the new udev extensions instead of HAL (and hopefully dropping it completely) and considering that it'll (hopefully) be using LXDE 2 next year, we'd see a great distro that just works without any major issues. After that a 64bit edition can't be too far off.

Howdy, Stranger!
