Wicd and WPA2/AES
  • ms3811ms3811 September 2010
This might be an oft repeated issue, but after a lot of googling and forum searching I haven't been able to get this working. I like wicd's interface a lot better than Network-Monitor. So I'm opening a new discussion hoping to get some resolution. If anybody has any tips of how to get this working or has gotten this to work please share.

    The problem:

I have a router configured as follows:

    - WPA2 security
    - AES encryption
    - SSID broadcast disabled

I can connect to this using NM without any issues, so I can I can safely conclude the drivers are fine. If I download and install wicd, it gets to the point where it recognizes the router, however does not go beyond "Validating authentication". Seems to wait here forever before giving up. Then keeps trying the same again and again with no luck. Haven't tried wicd with TKIP or WEP, but I've read many posts that say there is no issue with either of those. The problem only seems to be with WPA2/AES.

    Thank you for your time.

my I ask you which router and which firmware? because there are some issues with wicd and WPA2 with AES and dd-wrt Firmware

can you give the output of iwlist wlan0 scan (or how your wlan is called?)

@kultex, thanks for looking into this.

The router is a Linksys WRT54GC, running the original firmware from Linksys version 1.00.7. I have included the output of "iwlist eth1 scan" for both network-manager as well as wicd.

    With network-manager:

did you check that wpa_supplicant.conf is the same in both versions?

which driver do you use for the card?
  • ms3811ms3811 September 2010
I would imagine wpa_supplicant.conf is the same in both versions, since I didn't make any changes to it. Unless the wicd installer made any changes. Regardless, when wicd didn't work, I switched back to nm and didn't make any changes to wpa_supplicant.conf and it works.

In essence I can switch back and forth between the two and wicd doesn't work while nm works and the only changes I make to turn wicd on or off is to edit /etc/rcS.conf and .config/openbox/autostart.sh.

The driver is wl, it's a Broadcom BCM4315. Thanks for taking the time.

I have no more ideas - because there are known troubles with ath9k. Perhaps it is better to ask in the wicd forum http://wicd.net/punbb/
  • ms3811ms3811 September 2010
I'll do that, thanks for the tip.
