SliTaz on a AIRIS Kira 100
  • med_himed_hi June 2010
    Hi everyone and a big Bravo for the fantastics job that has been done so far.
    I have tried several distributions and so far, SliTaz is by far the best distribution for the Airis Kira 100
    1. eeebuntu-3.0-base.iso => nok
    2. eeebuntu-3.0-standard.iso => nok
    3. kubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso => nok
    4. LinpusLinux-LiveCD-i386.iso => nok too big, too slow
    5. ubuntu-9.10-netbook-remix-i386.iso => nok
    6. ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso => nok
    7. ubuntu-9.10-netbook-remix-i386.iso.part => nok
    8. Jolicloud PreAlpha => nok
    9. Jolicloud PreBeta => nok, graphic card was not compatible
    10. ubuntu-10.04-netbook-i386.iso

    my first good surprise was the distribution size, only 80 Mo, just perfect for my 2Go hard drive

    my second good surprise was the installation, it was just perfect, I followed the instructions and it works. Just one remark, I have to manually edit grub and the menu.lst file

    my third good surprise was speed. SliTaz is just as fast as light

    my fourth good surprise was the wifi, it works out of the box

    What went wrong, not out of the box
    [webcam]
    I installed the integrated Chicony Electronics Co. webcam driver manually with a #modprobe uvcvideo.

    [internal speaker]
    sound works but no sound is coming out from the internal speaker

    [integrated mic]
    integrated Mic does not record

    [integrated card reader]
    integrated card reader is not recognized, I tried the following with no success
    # modprobe mmc_block
    # modprobe mmc_core
    # modprobe tifm_sd

    I cannot switch the screen resolution to 800x480x24

    Anyway SliTaz rules !!

    VIA Linux Portal provides drivers on its Via Linux Portal at the following location
    http://linux.via.com.tw/support/downloadFiles.action
    I'll try them.
  • med_himed_hi June 2010
    I have downloaded the VIA+Ubuntu804Desktop+BSP+for+VX800_VX855+V1.0.0.tgz from http://linux.via.com.tw/support/beginDownload.action?eleid=323&fid=624

    I took the package VX800_VX855 and I extract it
    # wget "http://linux.via.com.tw/support/beginDownload.action?eleid=323&fid=624"
    # tar xvjf "Download.action?eleid=323&fid=624"
    cd down VIA+Ubuntu804Desktop+BSP+for+VX800_VX855+V1.0.0 to the SDMMC/deb folder
    convert the deb package to a SliTaz
    # tazpkg convert name_of_VIA_package.deb
    # tazpkg install name_of_VIA_package.tazpkg

    Airis Kira website is really lacking of informations about its kira 100 hardware.
    in order to face this problem I have installed Hardware Lister package described here under
    Version : B.02.14
    Short desc : Hardware Lister
    Web site : http://ezix.org/project/wiki/HardwareLiSter

    from the terminal run the following command
    # tazpkg get-install lshw
    once your package is installed you can run it from the terminal and direct its output to a file
    # lshw > ~/Documents/MyHardware.txt

    Success !!!
    The Internal speaker works now.
    root@slitaz:/home/tux# amixer contents
    numid=2,iface=MIXER,name='Speaker Playback Switch'
    ; type=BOOLEAN,access=rw------,values=2
    : values=off,off
    The trick is to activate the "Speaker Playback Switch" with the following command
    root@slitaz:/home/tux# amixer cset numid=2 on
    Thanks a lot for blconde post http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/1160/problem-with-sound-card-via-vt8237-module-snd_via82xx-duplicate-front-option

    Let's go for the SD card that is not recognized.
    I ran a lspci to get more details on the SD Card controller
    root@slitaz:/home/tux# lspci

    I checked the /var/log/boot.log and found that udev daemon did not start properly
