SliTaz LiveUSB in QEMU http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/218/slitaz-liveusb-in-qemu Mon, 23 Nov 2009 00:23:07 +0100 guitarMan666 218@/index.php?p=/discussions $ qemu -m 384 -kernel bzImage -append "root=rootfs.gz"

The issue however is that QEMU does not seem to be able to use a bootloader and must start the kernel directly. However doing this, the kernel panics. With:

Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)
Pid: 1, comm: swapper Not tainted 2.6.30.6-slitaz #1

There is also a call trace that I will give if requested (it's a little lengthy to add to the post). Is there a way to do this properly so that it loads in QEMU just like it would load from a BIOS?]]>

1.) Even though I installed Slitaz onto a USB using the innstructions here (http://www.pendrivelinux.com/install-slitaz-to-usb-from-windows/), it did not save the data onto the flash drive. Instead, it saves the data (by data, I mean /home) to a "tux" folder on one of my hard drives. I was aiming to make Slitaz a truly portable OS that I could use on any computer, so this is a big problem. I tried adding the Slitaz home=usb line in syslinux.cfg, as well as manually typing it in, neither way worked.

2.) Mountbox does not see one of my harddrives. It is a 1.5TB Seagate drive- specifically the ST31500541AS. It seems to see all of the other drives (all of my other drives are some sort of Western Digital model) just fine. Even Gparted will not see this drive for some reason. Gparted sees it when I run it in partedmagic instead of Slitaz, so this problem really stumps me.

3.) I haven't figured out how to use the package manager yet. What I have been doing is installing packages using the tazpkg get-install command. For example, tazpkg get-install mplayer, which works fine, asks if I want to install dependences and I say yes until I have all dependencies, then I type "mplayer" in the console to start mplayer and it says not found. I've also tried this with Skype.

When installing I used the latest cooking iso as of tonight. Sorry if any of these questions are basic, I didn't find much relevant information on the Slitaz site or wiki, so if there is someplace I should be finding this information before posting here I apologize.]]>

Two trouble-free apps are gone, gparted and epdfview.

Sound was broken until I did http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/comment/2132/#Comment_2132 . It was a fresh install with fresh updates so it might be that these old problems still are not fixed-
http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/368/sound-not-working-module-loaded-but-device-node-is-missing
http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/219/soundcard-not-detected/#Item_4

Slitaz abiword has never worked properly. Ubuntu abiword works. Slitaz abiword still has the same problem reported by me and someone else on the old forum about abiword displaying files with content as blank pages or nearly blank pages with strange symbols or occassional punctuation.

Slitaz openoffice does not work and has not worked for a long time. Ubuntu openoffice works. Slitaz openoffice appears to install and takes a half gb of hd space with java but does not open. Sometimes the menu has openoffice icons. Maybe it is related to http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/20/is-openoffice-installed/#Item_8 or to http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/comment/596/#Comment_596 that mentioned 2gb ram not being enough to install openoffice. I have 2gb ram plus 2gb swap plus almost 2gb hd space free when I tried to install. If almost 6gb is not enough to install, that is opposite of slitaz credo for simple and light and more like microsoft system requirements.

Does slitaz have any reliable word processor?

Are any snow flavors for low ram? I could not find any explanations in site documentations.

Thank you.]]>

In /var/lib/tazpkg there are 3 files:

Which one is used by tazpkg? It looks like a typo to me ("mirror" should be "mirrors" or the other way around).

firstly thanks to everyone who has helped with this awesome distro. i just installed stable 2.0 and it's been very easy to set up. however, i have encountered a problem with which i need help.

everytime i try tazpkg get-install packagename i get outputs like this one:

Extracting libnotify-0.4.4... 28 blocks
Extracting the pseudo fs... zcat: fs.cpio.gz: No such file or directory
rm: cannot remove 'fs.cpio.gz': No such file or directory
Installing libnotify... cp: cannot stat 'fs/*': No such file or directory
[ Failed ]
Removing all tmp files... [ OK ]

these errors occured on every dependency when i tried

tazpkg get-install xine-plugin

and

tazpkg get-install gecko-mediaplayer

in order for tazpkg to see gecko, i ran

tazpkg set-release cooking

was it a mistake to to do set-release cooking on my stable install? i'm wondering what could be causing these errors. i should mention, i also had problems with the get-flash-plugin script. i got this error in the output:

/usr/bin/get-flash-plugin: cd: line 53: can't cd to install_flash_player_10_linux

this was before running tazpkg set-release. i was able to manualy copy the libflashplayer.so plugin file to my firefox plugins directory which allowed it to work. i'm stumped on xine and gecko though. i'm hoping to get a working quicktime plugin installed.

thanks for your help and consideration. cheers.]]>
