Linux allways start with qwerty keyboard setting

I have an azerty keyboard and i have set it that way on the linux system, but since i have installed xorg, my laptop allways starts with a qwerty setting and even if I change the keyboard setting, close the session (as asked by a popup) and log on again there is no change.

Could some one help me.

Sup guys,
just instaled the new version on my laptop. Everything is going decently smoothly, Though there are two problems.

1. AbiWord after installation (of all components i.e additional packages) terminates immediately after launching. I checked the error: it says " Pango-Warning Shaping** Shaping faliure expect ugly output. shape-engine='basic engineFC', font ='dejavu sans11', text=''
2. Full screen flash videos have definate framing in them.

according to makers, the latest 'slitaz-cooking-iso' brings only X11
and no XVESA support - a drawback for many potential users,
especially if the new standard release 'v3' applies the same
philosophy.
there are very many machines out there for which no suitable display
drivers are integrated into the live.iso - which will surely compromise
the "portability strategy" of a live-system ; XVESA - if not optimally -
at least works on most machines.
if the linux community wants to win over users from 'ms.windows' -
as i gather it does and think it should - then it must take great care
that the system boots to a usable GUI on justabout any machine,-
especially important for a live-OS.
even if this entails a few extra MBs on the live.iso, i consider it to be
a prerogative for 'a working live-distro' to pack usable display-drivers
- as parexample 'puppylinux' does.
you could take as motto : "who cares if it`s .vesa or .org - as long as
the 'X.' works !".
for 'slitaz' it should be paramount to fix its approach toward X-drivers.
***a sad example of a non-working system is the above 'cooking' on
one of my machines - with an intel i810 chip (known also for bad
framebuffer mode support, among other idiosyncrasies).
+++ bash says to xconfig. ~ : -shadow argument incorrect............
must i cope with this ? - i never entered any 'arguments' ........ and
i don`t want to have any - over beer, yoghurt, or whatnot
(i prefer wine ! - it brings me smoothness in this rough age).

so, if you want to come out of the shadow, remember :
there are very many p3 and p4 machines sitting out there
and crying for a sleek&slim (=lean) OS - go out and get them !
[even p2 with 128mb ram would be workable with install to hdd]

Unable to login as the user created by adduser command

But if I use control box to create a user, it'll work fine.

Hi,i'm newbie linux user.Ihave old laptop with 192MB ram 476MHZ with window xp.

I dowloaded Slitaz via live cd.when i opened the system information/summary,it said 33MB ram used.when i opened also the task manager,it said 67MB ram used.I started the firefox and it said 73 MB ram is used,and the CPU in the task manager arised to 90%.
After one minute the firefox closed.What is the problems here,is it depended in the RAM or i have a mistake somewhere.secondly,how can i use the mouse,it does not work.(PS/2).I wish to replace the windows os with the Slitaz which said that is very light,but whithout help
i can not do it.

troubles with sata and upgrades

Got a good one for ya! Recently I've added a sata drive to my pc. Windows and slackware have no problen seeing
it. So I pop in the SliTaz 3.0 cooking iso, no problem seeing it, continue to install to the new drive. Then boot
into it, no troubles, 'cept for one minor detail. Trying to access other partitions on the sata drive, I open mountbox, or check with fdisk, the device is not there.
How can it not 'see' the drive from which it is running from?
Now, the first thing you're likely thinking is, 'how about an upgrade'. First of all I have nothing but troubles doing
the full upgrade to lzm. It does fix the sata issue, but breaks my internet. I can get around the internet breaking
by blocking all pkg's that have to do with internet. But the next problem is after a full upgrade, I no longer can
create files or folders on my system, I get an error window saying the file/folder is already there. No matter what I
name it. I think it might be a problem with the unicode, being changed after the upgrade. I think it's switching it
from utf8 to iso_something, not sure if this is true or how to fix. Is there a place that contains 'system wide"
settings where I might correct the unicode, if this is infact the issue.
Note - I have multiple partitions on my sata: ext3, ext4, ntfs.

Rhythmbox in Slitaz?

My question is:
Should I try to install rhythmbox? And if I should, then how?
I did already download the .deb and successfully converted it with "tazpkg convert".
But when I try to install it with "tazpkg install rhythmbox~~.tazpkg" nothing happens.
Is it possible that it wont work because of the objection that dave made here: http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/42/convert-deb-rpm-how-to

Tazpkg 3.2 supports a new .tazpkg format using lzma compression (30% smaller).
Every package (except tazpkg-3.2.tazpkg) has been moved to the new format.

If you already use tazpkg 3.2 you can update your system with `tazpkg upgrade'.

Overwise, please reinstall tazpkg (tazpkg get-install tazpkg --forced) before running `tazpkg upgrade'.

flash disks and noatime

I see others are talking about netbooks. I've installed Slitaz to a CF card that is on the IDE bus so it looks like a hard disk. The access time is updated on every read. Normally, I'd edit /etc/fstab and set .noatime on the partition mounted as root, but there isn't one. I imagine this is due to the way Slitaz decompresses its file system.

Can anybody tell me how I'd set noatime on all appropriate mounts, i.e. I guess all that are on the flash disk and not in RAM.

Slitaz on netbooks

Hello everybody.
Great little distro, do you people realise it's perfect for netbooks?
I run it on a Acer Aspire One, the 8gb ssd version. It is really fast!!! I am trying to get the cardreaders to work, unfortunally no succes with the packages. I don't know how to write scripts, otherwise i wrote one...
Also the display is 800 x 600, and it should be 1200 x 600.
So, i love it.

Latest Standard Cooking iso missing panels/menu?

Couldn't find the bug reporting part of the site (0_o) so here, I downloaded the latest standard cooking iso and booted it in VirtualBox for windows, it seems to be missing a menu/panel of the sort it used to have.. just the 3 icons on the start screen and the mouse.

Is this normal?

Install on HD USB without TAZUSB

Hi, I tried to install a full Slitaz in my usb pendrive but it goes in error at boot. I don't want to use tazusb or other LiveUSB methods, I want a full installation of Slitaz like a normal HD install one. I know that I have to add some parameters in menu.lst but I don't know them. In the old forum there was a topic with this parameters but in the new forum there isn't.

hello to everyone,

i'm new here so forgive me i'm a very noob ;) i've just booted my notebook from the slitaz live cd. first of all i wanna say, that i've searched already in the forum here but found no solution for my problem. so here it is:

searching for my wlan-card i found in "Tazhw Box":

Kernel Module: iwl3945
Description: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG/BG Network Connection driver for Linux

(there is also some other hardware listed, but no other network devices)

so i thought, that the drivers are already installed correctly... is this right?
Typing "iwconfig" says that my card is "wlan0" and for the others: "no wireless extensions."

starting wifibox it's scanning for networks but there's no network found although in windows there are a lot ;)
what do i have to do to get connected to my AP? which are the right settings in wifibox or what else is the problem?

please help me ;)

PS: at "drivers" in wifibox i selected "Module: iwl3945" and "Firmware: iwlwifi-3945-firmware". is this right?

SliTaz Cooking 20100221 : No Menu/Taskbar (?)

Hi there,

For the 1st time I'm able to boot Slitaz into VirtualBox without any problem.
However once the graphical environnement is started I dont have any menu or taskbar.
I'm just able to do ctrl+alt+F1/ctrl+alt+F7 to switch on/back to/from command line.

Is that normal ?
How can I get menu ?

Unable to start xinetd daemon with swat

Since xinetd is not provided by SliTaz, I download xinetd-2.3.14 from some site (the official website is inaccessible). Configure it with --prefix=/usr, make && make install. Then I create /etc/xinetd.conf:

service swat

port = 901
wait = no
user = root
protocol = tcp
}

Then I try to start the daemon by ./xinetd -d, it shows "Protocol tcp not in /etc/protocols". Then I remove the protocol line in xinetd.conf, it then says "A protocol or a socket_type must be specified for service: swat".

I have succeeded in running swat by inetd provided by SliTaz originally, but I'm still curious about how to use xinetd to run swat. Thank you.

I am not very good at digital stuff and I don't know exactly what the video format is, such as mp4, wmv, avi, and so on. I only know my iPod accepts mp4 video, my windows movie make supports wmv and if you want to upload your videos to youtube.com you have to make it into flv I think. And if you have a Camcorder video I think not many player can play it so just convert them.

You know I can easily manage those video format because of Aiseesoft Video Converter It allows you to convert videos to any video format you want(including HD video).

Here I will share with you how to use it:

Step 1: Load Video
You can load your videos into the converter by clicking “Add File”

Step 2: Choose output info
This converter provides you many output profiles for you to choose, you can choose your output profiles according to your need. And also you can just choose a certain video format.

You can also adjust the settings of your output profiles. You can even save a certain settings as your own output settings.

2.Type the value directly or set the value in "Left", "Right" and "Cropped area size" area to set the position of the cropping frame.

You can also select the aspect ratio from the Zoom Mode drop-down list. There are 4 choices for you: Full Screen, 16:9, 4:3 and Keep Original.

After you convert your videos you can put your video to iPod, Windows Movie Maker, youtube.com, and other player without any problem.

to be honest..it's a mess
maybe it's me, but it's truly a feat if one would be able to find what he's looking for.
everything from releases to questions to problems is completely thrown together, making it nearly impossible to simply browse around the forum.
now i'm not sure where i read it, but somewhere it said that you guys chose this one, because you dont need signatures and smileys on these boards. yes, i agree with that, it is unneeded.
but i dont see that as a reason to migrate to some forum software like this one.
you could simply use phpBB or myBB and disable everything that's not needed.

oh by the way, im writing this all in my frustration, in the hope something more sutable would be implemented

Saving my complete Slitaz onto HD

I installed slitaz on my first Harddrive /dev/sda... and I like it a lot just as it is :)
But now I thought about playing around with the mbr of /dev/sda
So before starting to play around with it I thought it might be a nice idea to make sure my existing slitaz is safe!
I just tried to copy all of the data in "/" with a live-cd but just as I expected, I am not allowed to do so!
(=> "Permission denied!")
So my question is:
What is the best way to save my slitaz data which are on /dev/sda onto my other hard-disk /dev/sdb?
So basically: How can I copy my existing slitaz best?
Oh ... I did already install grub to /dev/sdb because I thought that would be good, too!

wifi trouble, card installed not connecting to AP

Hi I have a zyxel m-102 cardbus I've installed ndis drivers and slitaz are picking the card up. I can see my access point which are WPA2-PSK(AES) . But can't get any connection for it. when running the network.sh manually it comes up saying "no lease, forking to background". I also know the AP are working since my xstreamer and work windows xp laptop can connect to it.

I've tried manually editing the network.conf, using static ip's that does not work either. I've also tried editing the wpa suplicant config, using the simple example :
network={
ssid="myap"
psk="thekey"
priority="5"
}

Any clue whats wrong?

Also ifconfig -a shows wlan0 as there

Problems after upgrading

I've got a problem after upgrading Slitaz to newest version. From time to time my keyboard stops responding - I can't even choose the resolution on starting. And Slitaz always hangs when I click 'Wireless manager'. Everything was fine before I made an upgrade...
What could be a problem?

I am looking for some documentation about installing it from a running linux into a 32 MB old usb.
I can not find any documentation or if there's a utility to do so. I mounted the iso and peeked into it, but the file there doen't seem to be for a bootable drive. What do I need to get it into the USB ?
I am working under linux.

left-handed mouse in SliTaz?

I have tried to find a way to set the mouse buttons for a left-handed user, but the SliTaz documentation does a good job of hiding how to do it. I'm playing with various distros in order to decide on one to install onto the 4.3GB hard drive of a 10+ year old notebook which currently has DSL frugal-installed on it. Perhaps LXDE doesn't allow a left-handed mouse. If used IDE HDs were cheaper where I live, I'd put a bigger HD in the notebook and install Windows 2000 on it because I find hardware to be hell in Linux. :(

I thought it should be defined in /etc/inittab, but mine seems correct and still, I am not able to access any tty's from x.
