if i've saved my rootfs in a machine and try to boot in another machine /etc/x11/xorg.conf exists, but this does not mean that it is good for the machine i'm booting in.
i got the problem tryng to but in my nvidia pc and in virtualbox.
commenting the if out let me boot well in both the systems.

If i install the real cpio program instead of the link to busybox i can extract them and i have firefox back.
So the questions are:
1) does busybox's cpio have a filesize limit when extracting files?
2) firefox is not extracted because the initial boot process uses busybox's cpio?
3) is there a bzImage limitation to the initramfs size?
4) am i missing something?
I've searched the forum and google but i haven't find anything.

Typing ram requirements on the homepage and download page would be a good start.

Typing the system requirements would be sufficient but you also could let people ask a "Flavor Finder" script for a recommended flavor based on common factors that cause problems and spurred the creation of certain flavors.

Input boxes-

Processor 0MHz
RAM 0MB
Hard Drive 0MB
Bootable USB Drive 0MB
Graphics Nvidia

Output-

Flavor X

Disclaimer-

"Based on experiences of users with systems like yours, we recommend trying this flavor. Usually, more than one flavor works. Some hardware might not work with the recommended flavor. For more information, visit the handbook or forum."

Booting from USB on an old laptop that does not support USB boot http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/769/booting-from-usb-on-an-old-laptop-that-does-not-support-usb-boot Fri, 19 Mar 2010 09:02:01 +0100 gilsont 769@/index.php?p=/discussions Testing build_deps with a minimal chrooted environnment http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/770/testing-build_deps-with-a-minimal-chrooted-environnment Fri, 19 Mar 2010 10:49:15 +0100 Gokhlayeh 770@/index.php?p=/discussions
I use a minimal chroot (tazwok + slitaz-toolchain) to verify build_deps of receipts. I build the chroot in my home USB in live session to save ram. I also use a script to remove all packages installed during cooking at exit, because I want to keep a minimal environnment for testing build_deps.

Create the chroot in /home/chroot :
mkdir /home/chroot
# You can mount a device to /home/chroot
# with mountbox or mount
tazpkg get-install busybox --root="/home/chroot"
echo "No" | tazpkg get-install bash --root="/home/chroot"
tazpkg get-install slitaz-toolchain --root="/home/chroot"
tazpkg get-install tazwok --root="/home/chroot"
tazpkg get-install tazpkg --root="/home/chroot"
tazpkg get-install lzma --root="/home/chroot"
mkdir /home/chroot/home/slitaz

Note : you can keep theses lines in a script file if needed. Just add #!/bin/sh in first line and make executable with :
chmod +x script_file

Add a script file to delete unwanted packages when exiting chroot :
cat > /home/chroot/chroot_script.sh << "EOF"<br />#!/bin/sh
/bin/sh --login
for pkg in $(cat /var/log/tazpkg.log | grep -v Removed | sed 's/\(.*\)\(- Installed - \)\(.*\)\( (.*\)/\3/'); do
echo "y" | tazpkg remove $pkg
done
rm /var/log/tazpkg.log

EOF
chmod +x "/home/chroot/chroot_script.sh"

Note: /bin/sh --login log you in the chrooted environnment. The commands after that line auto-remove packages added when cooking at exit. You can hack this file to execute various automated actions when entering and exiting chroot.

Add a script to mount and umount chroot :

cat > /usr/bin/tazchroot << "EOF"<br />#!/bin/sh
cat /etc/resolv.conf > /home/chroot/etc/resolv.conf
if [ ! -d "/home/chroot/proc/1" ]; then
echo "Mounting virtual filesystems..."
mount -t proc proc /home/chroot/proc
mount -t sysfs sysfs /home/chroot/sys
mount -t devpts devpts /home/chroot/dev/pts
mount -t tmpfs shm /home/chroot/dev/shm
mount /home/slitaz /home/chroot/home/slitaz
chroot /home/chroot ./chroot_script.sh
until [ "$ps" = "2" ]; do
echo "Waiting for the end of all other chroot process..."
ps=$(ps | grep `basename $0` | grep -v grep | grep -v basename | wc -l)
sleep 1
done
umount /home/chroot/home/slitaz
umount /home/chroot/dev/shm
umount /home/chroot/dev/pts
umount /home/chroot/sys
umount /home/chroot/proc
else
echo "The chroot is already mounted"
fi
EOF
chmod +x /usr/bin/tachroot

Note : This script mount /home/slitaz in you're chroot, so you can use tazwok as if it is on you're normal environnment.

This work extends the tazhw tool to make setting up devices like
printer or scanner easier. Please help to test it. More details:
http://labs.slitaz.org/projects/show/setup

First, you must have an upgraded system (atleast udev). Then, simply
install the package and open the tazhw box. Click on a device and
follow the prompts.
OR simply type "tazhw setup [device]". More details here:
http://labs.slitaz.org/wiki/setup

Parallel port printers and ati graphic card are supported but not tested.
If you do have these, I really need your help to test them.

EDIT: For nvidia and ati, I assume you have xorg. xorg procedure is there but not yet enabled. However, if you have Xvesa, you can stop slim and call "tazhw setup xorg" to configure. Then, you can rerun nvidia or ati setup.

Well, I would like to share the availability of a interesting project

http://hacktolive.org/wiki/RUNZ

The purpose is to create autonomous portable linux app , as likely the window's .exe ones

Here, you can have a look of what's been already done for Linux and Windows !!

http://hacktolive.org/wiki/Portable_Applications

(The Apps have been made portable with ThinApp and are runned under Wine)

Slitaz is truly accomplished but Ms Office use is still necessary for a worker.

...thus, my goal is to create a .runz that will contain only a Wine + Ms Office build with ThinApp and we can drop , without dependencies , on usb key . Therefore, no install which will increase deadfully my iso (frugall install) ! ;)

To run a .runk , this is required

http://hacktolive.org/files/runz/runz-framework-0.8.9.8.deb

Is there anybody suffisiently good and interesed to compil this package in .takpkg one and start with me to make a tutorial ?

On the hd installation page: http://doc.slitaz.org/en:handbook:installation

I read: "If you can use the LiveCD, you should be able to install SliTaz."

On the flavors page: http://www.slitaz.org/en/get/flavors.html -I read that the "loram" version (flavor) will run on 64MB.

My questions:

1. Will the regular stable version run on a 64MB computer if I can somehow get it installed? i.e. The regular stable version needs more than 64MB to run as a LiveCD, but could run fine in 64MB if installed? Or, am I limited to the loram version?

2. What is the difference between the regular and loram versions?

3. Is the loram flavor a stable version or cooking?

4. Regarding "If you can use the LiveCD, you should be able to install SliTaz." Does this only refer to the regular version, or can you install the loram version (to a hdd) from the LiveCD?

5. Will an intel Triton chipset computer from 1996 run any version of Slitaz well?
