when i try to cook the linux-wireless the process try to compile the linux package it depends to. But the process stop with this error

/home/slitaz/wok/linux/receipt: line 24:24: report: command not found

i understand that the package cointaing the report command is not istalled in the system but i'm not able to understand which package i must install. Making a ' tazpkg search-pkgname report' more the twenty packages come out.
My second attempt has been to compile the driver downloading the source from the realtek website. Modifing the source i finally i got the .ko kernel module after a insmod and a depmod -a my wifi adpter started to function but tring to install it definetely in the system (certainly in the wrong way) the interface eth0 dissapered. So i think the the right way is to complire the linux-wireless package in the wok.

and then it works well, perl Curses.so is linked with "libncursesw.so.5" and my app works. I think it shold be solved in dstribution packages (compile with widechars by default, or as separate package).

Also it seems that midnight commander is compiled without unicode support (there is a problem for example with text files view and edit on UTF-8 console or via ssh). And similar for smbfs (mount.cifs) which do not accept "charset" option. It's very good that Slitaz have UTF-8 support on locales level, but this application level options are also important for me.

Anyway, I managed to get it all working and I thought you should be aware that the tazhw box command (I think it was) installs the latest nvidia driver which killed my slitaz, mainly because Im on a nvidai fx5200 on that pc and that isnt really supported on the 190 nvidia driver.
I had to follow that great guide on manual install but wouold like to suggest someone puts in a question box into tazhw so you can select an older driver, like I needed 173.

A couple of other things.. It doesnt boot right (takes ages hanging on things then finally booting up with no mouse input and just a usb keybaord not ps/2) for me on first install either I had to write the words 'slitaz noapic' to get the live cd working then put 'noapic' into the grub commands after. And it chose hd1,0 as the first boot device and I had to change that to hd0,0 to make it boot after install.

Anyway dont mean to quibble at all just wanted to say I love the work poeple have done and try help another.
Question: I do have a question about remastering, does that option mean that I can save my installed nvidia driver and all the other little changes I made by making my own live cd? Because if something happens to it I would like to just install it ready made.

Or does remastering not work like that? And is it easy:D

thank you very much,

There is something seriously wrong with the rcS boot sequence and network.sh [SOLVED] http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/2671/there-is-something-seriously-wrong-with-the-rcs-boot-sequence-and-network.sh-solved Mon, 07 Mar 2011 06:07:25 +0100 on4aa 2671@/index.php?p=/discussions [updated] I am talking here about /etc/init.d/rcS and /etc/init.d/network.sh. I stumbled upon this when my Fritz!WLAN USB stick never started after booting, but did when hitting the "Restart" button in netbox. I first reported the symptoms here: http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/2663/fritzwlan-usb-stick-works-but-does-not-start-automatically.

What is going wrong?

During boot with SliTaz 3.0, udev is launched by rcS but fails to detect the WLAN USB stick. rcS then continues with various scripts including network.sh.

Obviously, network.sh fails miserably at detecting any wlan0.Only after finishing local.sh will rcS start several deamons, one of which is the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL). On my old laptop HAL is what finally succesfully detects my WLAN USB stick... Way too late.

After booting, the Network Status Monitor will not show anything for wlan0.Nonetheless, one still can manage to get online by hitting the "Restart" button under the "Configure" tab of netbox.

What needs to be changed in rcS?

In /etc/init.d/rcS.conf, I changed:

UDEV="yes"

to

UDEV="no"

since in my particular case, udev fails anyhow during booting.

More importantly, I changed

RUN_SCRIPTS="bootopts.sh network.sh i18n.sh hwconf.sh local.sh"

to

RUN_SCRIPTS="bootopts.sh i18n.sh hwconf.sh local.sh"

making sure that network.sh will not be launched before detecting my WLAN hardware.

In /etc/init.d/rcS, add a line to launch network.sh after the daemons have started, as indicated below:

# Start all daemons specified with $RUN_DAEMONS.
echo "Starting all daemons specified in /etc/rcS.conf..."
for daemon in $RUN_DAEMONS
do
if [ -x /etc/init.d/$daemon ]; then
/etc/init.d/$daemon start
fi
done

/etc/init.d/network.sh

# Back to a verbose mode.

What is wrong with network.sh?

After making these changes to rcS, there are still errors in the boot log originating with network.sh. I had to add a sleep command of a hefty 25 seconds to the wifi() procedure of /etc/init.d/network.sh:

wifi() {
sleep 25
# For wifi. Users just have to enable it through yes and usually
# essid any will work and the interface is autodetected.

You may have to experiment with the duration of sleep in function of your particular laptop and WLAN USB stick. For the Fritz!WLAN stick you need to end up with about 34s total boot time as reported ate the end of /var/log/boot.log. Anything less and it will not work.

What is achieved?

After applying these changes, you will be able to boot as fast as before to the desktop. The added delay only applies to the moment that you get connected to your WLAN. Do not be deceived the first time you boot like this by the fact that you will see nothing happening at the level of the Network Status Monitor. Just wait patiently for 25 seconds and then click on the Network Status Monitor and change the Name to wlan0, to see that you are already connected. You will need to do this once. Next time, you boot your computer, you will witness via the Network Monitor how your computer connects to WLAN shortly after logging in to the desktop (that is if you are quick enough typing your password!) All users will now be able to connect to the WLAN in this fashion, without the need to enter netbox, nor to know the root password.

Hello,

A couple of days ago, I installed SliTaz 2.6.30.3 on a 12 year old Toshiba Satellite 4000CDT (Pentium II 233MHz, 156MB RAM @66MHz, 800x600x24bit video, 40GB HD, 1 USB1.0 via ISA). I am really positively impressed with the responsiveness Slitaz is getting out of this machine. More so then when I tried Puppy Linux.

My problem:
I managed to get a Fritz!WLAN USB stick working via ndiswrapper and surf the net, however it never starts automatically...until I manually restart with /etc/init.d/network.sh restart

I wonder if somebody can help me with this minor annoyance?

When I click on the Network Status Monitor, I get:
Connection
Name: Unknown (and only "lo" is available as selectable value)
Status: Disconnected

Continuing by clicking on Configure, shows under the Connections tab, the following:
Interface   Type         Status
 lo             Loopback connected (127.0.0.1)
 wlan0       Wireless   -

Full status correctly shows the wireless interface, all wireless networks it hears and the routing data.

My /etc/network.conf looks like this:
# Config file used by: /etc/init.d/network.sh
#

# Set default interface.
INTERFACE="wlan0"

# Dynamic IP address.
# Enable/disable DHCP client at boot time.
DHCP="yes"

# Static IP address.
# Enable/disable static IP at boot time.
STATIC="no"

# Set IP address and netmask for a static IP.
IP="192.168.0.6"
NETMASK="255.255.255.0"

# Set route gateway for a static IP.
GATEWAY="192.168.0.1"

# Set DNS server for a static IP.
DNS_SERVER="192.168.0.1"

# Wifi connection.
# Enable/disable wireless connection at boot time.
WIFI="yes"

# Wifi interface (iwconfig) and ESSID.
WIFI_INTERFACE="wlan0"
WIFI_ESSID="my_essid"
WIFI_MODE=""
WIFI_KEY="my_password"
WIFI_KEY_TYPE="wpa"
WPA_DRIVER="wext"
WIFI_CHANNEL=""WIFI_IWCONFIG_ARGS=""

and my_essid.conf looks like this and was added to the favorites:
# Wireless connection configuration.
#
WIFI_ESSID="my_essid"
WIFI_KEY="my_password"
WIFI_KEY_TYPE="wpa"

Now, only when I click Restart under the Netbox Configuration tab, do I get connected. The option "wlan0" now becomes available under Network Status Monitor, but I also need to manually select it.
What am I overlooking here? How can I automate my connection?

Midori - flash and other problems http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/871/midori-flash-and-other-problems Tue, 30 Mar 2010 08:39:35 +0200 monz 871@/index.php?p=/discussions http://forum.slitaz.org/index.php/discussion/comment/1911/#Comment_1911

but decided that it really belonged as the starting point for a new discussion, so that the title focuses on Midori.

I got disgusted with the huge size of Firefox a long time ago, and could never understand why SliTaz (which is otherwise so small and lightweight) had been holding on to it.

I've been a fan of Opera for a long time, and have replaced Firefox with Opera in all of my SliTaz installations (I have 10 of them). But Opera, while very fast, is also getting larger and more complex all the time, and i don't use most of the newer "features". I also cannot use Opera to access some important websites, such as my bank ... which is a drag, because i have to go back to Firefox for that.

I also install Links and Retawq on all of my SliTaz systems, so as to have the _really_ lightweight browsers available for the sites on which they will work. I was at first glad to see the switch to Netsurf a few months ago, but there were a few problems with Netsurf and i noticed that it didn't last long as the default SliTaz browser.

I am much happier with Midori, and very glad to see the switch to Midori as the default browser.
But I also have a few strange issues with Midori.

I see from online forums both here at SliTaz and at other distros that many people have had problems getting flash to work in Midori. For me, the audio works fine, but the video only works after i toggle the status toolbar on or off. After that the video is ok, and then if i try to view another webpage that uses flash, i have to toggle the status toolbar again to get that video.

And the biggest problem i have with Midori is that the SliTaz forum login page does not accept my login when i try to do it using Midori. Guys, you really have to fix this! Your distro can't have a default browser which will not let forum members log in to your distro's own forum!

I installed flash and reinstalled Midori using the package manager, then when nothing seemed to change, I tried to restart. Unfortunately, while I could click all of the applications and shortcuts on the screen, none of them did anything. I eventually restarted the laptop by removing the power. When it came back on, I got through the login screen fine, only to be greeted by a completely black screen with just my mouse cursor on it.

I can right click on the screen and it shows the normal right-click menu for the desktop but none of the links work except terminal (under 'Favourite applications'). Also, 'Activate Composite' turns the screen grey.

So... any ideas on how to fix this?

IPtables question ... http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/1981/iptables-question-... Sun, 31 Oct 2010 03:37:28 +0100 Darjeeling 1981@/index.php?p=/discussions
My current /etc/firewall.conf file looks like this ...

# Network interface.
INTERFACE="eth0"

# Enable/disable kernel security.
KERNEL_SECURITY="yes"

# Enable/disable iptables rules (iptables package must be installed).
IPTABLES_RULES="yes"

# Netfilter/iptables rules. This shell function is included in
# /etc/init.d/firewall.sh to start iptables rules ...
iptables_rules()

{
# Drop all input connections.
iptables -P INPUT DROP

# Drop all output connections.
iptables -P OUTPUT DROP

# Drop all forward connections.
iptables -P FORWARD DROP

# Accept input on localhost (127.0.0.1).
iptables -A INPUT -i lo -j ACCEPT

# Accept input on the local network (192.168.0.0/24).
iptables -A INPUT -s 192.168.0.0/24 -j ACCEPT

# Accept near all output traffic.
iptables -A OUTPUT -m state --state NEW,ESTABLISHED,RELATED -j ACCEPT

# Accept input trafic only for connections initialized by user.
iptables -A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
}

Today I wanted to further improve my self-made 'SliTaz distro' by adding a short script that would allow my friend to temporarily open (and close again) a specific port for incoming TCP traffic, so she could use the BitTorrent client in Opera. I thought that something like this ...

Open Port : iptables -I INPUT -p tcp --dport 18768 -j ACCEPT
Close Port: iptables -D INPUT -p tcp --dport 18768 -j ACCEPT

... in combination with a token and swapping two .desktop files in /usr/share/applications (with red and green icons) would be an elegant solution to the problem. But when I made my first experiments with the iptables commands I noticed that none of this was necessary as the Opera BitTorrent client worked without having to open a dedicated port ... and I guess that the last of the above iptables rules ...

# Accept input trafic only for connections initialized by user.
iptables -A INPUT -m state --state RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT

... is responsible for this. But I'm wondering whether this is safe? Isn't it possible that by simply clicking on some sort of malicious link a user initiates a session where the opposite end can request any port to be opened up? Wouldn't it be much better to individually open standard ports like 20, 21, 23, 25, 143 etc. when they are needed?

How to make slitaz 4 successful http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/2659/how-to-make-slitaz-4-successful Sat, 05 Mar 2011 03:39:15 +0100 slicel 2659@/index.php?p=/discussions
Slitaz has one stable release event per year that will generate publicity for good or bad and for new users is slitaz's "only one chance to make a first impression."

To make the v4 release succeed, it is worth remembering the v3 problems.

Slitaz 3 had broken word processing (abiword), broken printing (cups, gutenprint), broken dialup, broken firewall, and broken compiling (linux-source).

Many of those are basic functions-

It is more understandable for a distro to be buggy with the latest technology but less understandable to be buggy with basic functions.

It is more understandable to have a buggy basic function in v1 but less understandable to have a buggy basic function in v3 or v4.

It is nice to reduce boot time from 6 seconds to 5 seconds but it is more important for spreading slitaz to be able to plug in a local printer and print from firefox in less than a year.

Slitaz 3 might have had more problems than slitaz 2 (looking at feedback) with-

tazusb
loram flavor

Those might not be basic functions of all distros but they are part of slitaz's advertised niche so should just work.

Even what a rude person might think is a "stupid" user mistake gives valuable information to help slitaz.  What is it about the slitaz os gui that leads to 3 years of new users running the installer on an unprepared hd?  As mentioned a few years ago, it is not so stupid to think that "installer" is the first step, although it is actually the second step.  How many 2011 users will think slitaz v4 is broken?

Any single feedback can be the tip of the iceberg, given all the people who read the forum without registering or try slitaz without ever visiting the website because a friend or relative distributed a dozen copies.  We will never hear from many slitaz trial users.  They will decide with a toss of the hand, not by registering another account on some website.

Every distro, the day or week after its new release publicity, has some portion of its newly burned disks spinning in computers and some portion of newly burned disks sitting in trash bins.

At some point in time, Microsoft only had 100 users.

Thank you
