How to quiesce the hard disk

Hey gents. I'm trying to spin down my hard disk, using hdparm. But unfortunately something in Slitaz does access the disk almost each second. This is very visible with a usb key for instance, as one plugged the led flashes every second or two. So my hard disk never stops. I can force stop with hdparm -Y but of course it automatically spins up again quickly. Any idea ? Thanks

I'm a new tazuser and I find this distribution very nice.

My mother in law want a computer very simple to use. So, I tried a lot of distros and I fall on ubuntu netbook remix.
The problem of this one is it's weight. It's too heavy for the laptop I found for her.

I ask again : "Is it possible to make a slitaz netbook like ubuntu ?"

I've recently installed SliTaz 3.0 on my old ThinkPad X24 -- works great!
Everything is configured to work well except for the LX-Panel applet, which shows my battery is always 100% full. I found a reported errata and a patch here:

However, I do not know how to apply the patch. Can someone post instructions or a link to useful reference info?

How to create URL shortcut on desktop

I'm a newbie. Come from Win world. Have been searching for about one hour now for the creation of a shortcut of an URL (with firefox as browser) on my slitaz desktop. Apparently the mouse right button click doesn't include what I look for. Do you happen to have an idea how to? Thanks for your help.

wusb54gc v.3 and kernel modules

i'm a knewbee, so i may be missing the obvious...please have a little patience. i have read and searched all over the wikis/web to get the linksys wusb54gc v.3 adapter to work with this distro, without luck

Scenario:
using slitaz-aircrack...20091124.iso from a usb drive on an acer aspire one

already tried modprobe rt73 and rt73usb separately.
The dmesg and lsmod confirm that the modules have no problem loading.

Under "system information" in the "USB devices" i can see the card and its info under EHCI host controller, so the computer knows the usb device is attached.

Problem: in "Hardware auto-detect" the new module doesn't appear under "Kernel module", so I can't detect the device under pci/usb auto detect.

any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated

Unable to make audio cd with Burnbox

I have used Burnbox to make images from iso files, but I have not been able to make audio cds with Burnbox. I have visited the Burnbox Manual, and installed the ffmpeg file to allow burning of audio cds, but there is no hard drive activity on my computer when I hit the "Add" button to change the file to the wav format. I have an Audio CD folder in my tmp folder, but it is empty. Is there another Audio CD creator in the SliTaz Package Manager that I have over looked, or is there additional software to install to get Burnbox to work?

xorg can not find a suitable resolution of the screen and falls with the error:
"(EE) Screen (s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error: no screens found"
the entire log is large enough to upload here (1700 lines)

failure to create a usb install

Trying to create a usb install with slitaz installer(persistant), it lists my usb as sdb1, but there is a ? by it when I do a listing of available devices. If I type /dev/sdb1 as the destination for install I am told it doesn't exist.
I can create a live usb install however, it can see sdb1 as my usb key.
What am i doing wrong?

I've been running SliTaz 3.0 from a customized live CD since months and I'm very happy with it. But as my PC is low on RAM I've been looking around, trying to slim down the installation a little more. In /usr/share/i18n there are almost 10mb of locales and character maps and I'm wondering ... do I really need all this? Wouldn't it be enough for me to keep only the locales I really need, e.g. de_DE, en_GB, en_US and fr_FR? I also have no idea which of the 227 character maps are really needed and which aren't. All I know is, I've got a French keyboard and I read & write English, German and a rather lousy French (still learning). Maybe one of you knows which of these files can be safely removed?

I'm an old hand with Windows but not fluent with Linux flavors, so please excuse me if I'm asking a dumb question.

I have a problem with Midori in that it will only run Gmail in basic HTML mode, so I thought I'd try installing FF. I downloaded the firefox-3.6.12.tar.bz2 file but it seems SliTaz doesn't have an app that will open the tarball -- how can this be so ???? I assume it *does* have such an app, it's just that I don't know what it's called. Anyway, could someone let me know how I proceed from here?

BTW, the SliTaz mirrors seem to be down today ...

i loaded slitaz on my hard drive and after it rebooted it says no operating system can be found. i have both xp and slitaz. after i put in the live cd it will work but i cant get back into xp

[SOLVED] Problems playing a mpeg2 file

I have a mpeg2 video file burned to a dvd.
When played about 45 seconds into it there is a pause, as if the dvd player has to catch up after the cache is used up. The dvd player will stay spining and will flash about once a second until the 45 second spot then will start flashing rapidly as it loads more info.
After this it will play fine until the movie is over
I'm using vlc and tryed all different cache settings but no change.
I have also tryed mplayer and gxine and the same problem.
Under windows xp using nero or wmp it works fine, so I'm thinking there i some setting that needs changed but I can't figure it out.
Also when playing a DVD (.vob) it works fine, no pause.
Any ideas?

I'm researching Slitaz as an alternative to Damn Small Linux. I've been running DSL on my old Inspiron 3000 laptop for a while now, and it's perfectly suited to the machine's specs (233 MHz Pentium, 112 MB RAM, 2 GB HDD). However, DSL is getting pretty old and I'd love to have a more modern web browser, so Slitaz looks like a good substitute.

My questions have to do with the different flavors of the live CD. The standard version won't work, since it requires 160 MB and I've only got 112. In theory, slitaz-loram should work since it only needs 80 MB, and since I've got more than that, I shouldn't need to go all the way down to slitaz-loram-cdrom. However, I've read that an error-free installation can only be performed with the full version of the live CD. So, my questions are these:

1) Is slitaz-loram the ISO I should use to try out Slitaz?

2) Will I need to use the full ISO for installation? (in text mode, presumably)

3) Is it true that once installed, Slitaz will run with only 16 MB of RAM?

I'd appreciate any answers you can give me. I suppose I could just start burning CDs, but I'm trying to cut down on the guesswork so I don't have to waste time and/or CD-Rs.

I installed slitaz on an old Portege 2010 and I am pretty impressed with the performance. However, I cannot get the OS to detect the mini PCI wifi card (I think OEM by Agere) and the Cardbus attached DVD drive. I have gone through the doco extensively but nothing seems to activate the these cards.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Trying to use mhWaveEdit to record an audio stream (from BBC iPlayer), I set up a sample format and recording time, click "Start recording" and the program simply disappears. Tried various combinations of sample format etc but the same thing happens every time. Any ideas?

I would be testing the SliTaz 3.0 on VMware virtual machine, but found no way to do this, I took a good searched the net and nothing so far, it does not recognize the hard disk virtual machine, since I created the partitions for another linux to see if that was the problem (which was not suspected) not resolved also. Can anyone give me a hand?

Screen Layout

Slitaz is a great distro overall especially for weak systems. It uses little resources and occupies little space on hard drive (or ssd). This makes it a powerful alternative for netbooks (and tablets) but something is missing, an adequate layout for the small screens, like Ubuntu netbook remix, Chrome OS, etc.
My questions: Is it possible to only change the look without mayor changes to the system?
If so: Is anybody working on this?
Another thing, there are always problems with wifi and other basic drivers on most distros, but you really don't hear much ubuntu users have those problems, Can't you make an ubuntu to slitaz pakage or driver converter? I mean it is open source, no?

I am having this problem on a SliTaz 3.0 installation on a Fujitsu Stylistic 3500.
I have users duane, tux, and user-tux listed but I can only log in as root.
I see a solution proposed under a discussion marked Cannot Login to Desktop, now I am wondering what the name my usergroup would be.
Certainly user name would be duane I am just not sure what to put down as the usergroup when I try to fix it.
I think I will delete the other users in the control box since I can't login as either of them.

I've tried the cooking version but only my laptop screen appears in the GUI. On crunchbang (ubuntu+openbox), lxrandr works well.

hello, I just noticed this (undesirable) feature after launching tazx from my user account; then I my customized .xsession was not there and I had to rewrite it.
I guess tazx should at least make a backup.
