Rather than adding more and more packages : Why not concentrate all
the efforts towards integreating deeply : 1 FileManager,1
InternetBrowser, 1 MultimediaPlayer into Slitaz ?

In other words, what's the sense to have 5 Players, 5 Browsers ?

One can start, for exemple, to reprogram Midori, Pcmanfm and a video player in the way they will share that most as possible. (Gtk is the first I have in mind)

Make slitaz the most minimum and stable but offering the basic services a user wants to have for it.

I think trying to add more and more package, and manage more and more
dependies will bring the project to evaporate into a cloudy concept.

One should focus on the fact that we don't expect Slitaz to become a
full alternaltive of Windows or Ubuntu , but rather something
extremely optimised, fast and stable for Internet and Watchings
Multimedia.

In my opinion it's a waste of time to try to bring such heavys things
such as all Office's Suite, Games.. etc etc .. as you won't find a single
user who has only a single Slitaz as OS (no Windows, no Ubuntu)

99% of us use a Browser with Slitaz , but only 1% will use Slitaz to have also VirtualBox, and another 1% will use Slitaz to use Ernia sometimes and there is a big chance these users have already the equivalent in Windows or Ubuntu. I supect that lot's of package are just useless and have been compiled for a bunch of users who may not use it anymore.

smoothing USB Installation http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/2359/smoothing-usb-installation- Tue, 04 Jan 2011 02:02:12 +0100 kreeg 2359@/index.php?p=/discussions
I've been a SliTaz user for two months. It has always worked on my Aspire One Netbook right out of the box. Of all the small distros that I have tried, SliTaz handles WIFI connections the best. Especially 2WiRE, some other small distros cannot handle 2WIRE. I like this little distro for its size and speed, but initially I found it buggy, like no Tux login, Midori crashes, boot failures, etc. Chasing around in the forum led me ultimately to fixes in unexpected ways. Once I found the source to most of the problems, I decided to start with a new installation which I am reporting here for any others that have similar stories. All installations and settings below are done from the command line in XTerm, which seems to be more consistently successful.

SliTaz does not like the FAT32 file system. Switching to ext3 takes care of the Tux no-login issue, ineffective system writes, etc. These three commands did the job:

fdisk -l (listed the USB as /dev/sdb1)
  tazusb format /dev/sdb1 ext3
  tazusb get-liveusb /dev/sdb1

In a few moments the installation was complete. Upon booting the USB, I found the Tux login problem had vanished. Tux's Home was on the USB instead of in memory as it was when forced to use 'root' on the FAT32 install. Downloads, bookmarks, etc., were now persistent. My first task was to get passwords set. From XTerm, I found that 'passwd' is cranky; it wants a combination of caps, lowercase and digits. Setting the passwords for 'root' and 'tux' made the system more secure. Next, I wanted to install flash on Midori, which I had been unable to do with the FAT32 install:

  tazpkg get-install get-flash-plugin && get-flash-plugin

I then installed AbiWord:

  tazpkg get-install abiword

SliTaz (and Linux distros in general) suffer a woeful lack of decent fonts but it is easy to use fonts from XP. By using the 'cp' command, I transferred 10MB of fonts I liked best by copying from

  /media/ACER/WINDOWS/Fonts/(fontnames.ttf)

to

  /usr/share/fonts/truetype/

AbiWord was able to immediately access the fonts, as was mtPaint. I decided to download mtPaint's manual to the hard drive so that it would also be available for a mini-install of SliTaz on an old 128 MB flash drive (SliTaz works beautifully on this tiny drive, BTW). The manual is not available with the help key in mtPaint, but it isn't very far away on the HD.

After these initial installations, I used 'tazusb' to write and compress the file system to the USB:

  tazusb writefs gzip

Tazusb's compression formats take a while, 'gzip' is about 40 percent faster than 'lzma' but its file is about 25 percent larger. When I installed to the 128 MB drive, I used the 'lzma' compression, but I found that it sometimes would make the USB unbootable. I didn't want to use 'gzip' on the tiny drive, but there was no choice - though gzip works very well. I've taken to moving the rootfs.gz file from Tux's boot directory to the HD before doing a writefs on the 128MB SliTaz.

Later I installed gnuchess and Gimp. I prefer Xboard to Eboard for gnuchess, but I've not yet figured a way to do this. The Gimp install doesn't include the manual and I've yet to figure this out, too. I'm also disappointed Gimp doesn't handle GIF files. Neither does mtPaint. They do handle GIFs on many other distros. I installed the giflib but this had no effect on these applications.

Midori tends to crash when backspacing to the beginning in the google search box on the home page. Another crash occurs when using the 'back' button when there are several tabs active. To avoid this, right click the tab and close it. I like Midori but it requires work-arounds.

I'm still a noob, but I have fiddled with Linux on and off for ten years. I have come to dislike bloat in any OS. Too many little-used bells and whistles, too slow and often buggy and inconsistent from one release to the next. Then there are the security issues with you-know-who. SliTaz is a wonderful little distro. There are some very helpful people on its forum. They are very generous though sometimes they make suggestions they themselves are not checking out. There is much effort seeing that SliTaz has an extensive choice of packages. This is attractive but I hope as much effort goes into making installation automatic for people with zero Linux background. Some might think that 'guides' are the answer to installation problems. Funny, but sometimes even the guides don't have it right. I believe that instead of extensive help suggestions in installation guides, the same work could be made toward debugging the installation, eliminating the need for most guides. This kind of work is not exciting, it's tedious and full of attention-to-detail. The real heroes are to be found in the trenches of bug-warfare. It would be nice if SliTaz went into an 'app freeze' and did nothing but beta test the 'stable' ISO with its most reliable volunteers for three months prior to its annual release. The SliTaz user community will grow by leaps and bounds if this philosophy were to become defacto.

My small wish list:
1) make dual boot (USB anyway) available or more apparent, and 2)fool-proof a simple (ie, a single tazlito command) remastering of the current USB/HD boot to LiveCD to use on systems with no USB boot and no floppy disk drives (there are a lot of them just now going into the toilet).

To the SliTaz team and dedicated volunteers, I thank you. I have your snail-mail donation address and I will contribute, but I understand no checks (due to prohibitive fees) and I don't know if cash (US Dollars) is acceptable. I hope others donate too.

Comments on this post certainly welcome.

I'm going to try and be as detailed as possible here so please try and bear with me. So in my office area I have 3 computers: Thin Client 1, Thin Client 2, and Desktop 1. I also have a network switch. The thin clients are being used as full computers using SliTaz as the OS on their internal flash cards. What I want to see happen is using Thin Client 1 to receive the wireless connection using its wireless card and send it to the switch using its ethernet port and be able to connect the other two computers to that switch so all have internet access without having to buy some wireless cards or run long ethernet cables to my router. I've done some research and I think the general direction I need to head in to do this is IP masquerading but as to exactly what to do from there on I'm somewhat lost. Any guidance that could be offered on how to achieve this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance, Zackary

Live CD boots but installation hangs... http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/2305/live-cd-boots-but-installation-hangs... Fri, 24 Dec 2010 19:04:00 +0100 Maximus559 2305@/index.php?p=/discussions I've got the Slitaz 3.0 standard live CD up and running on my old Dell Inspiron 3000 laptop. Specs are as follows:

233 MHz Penium MMX
208 MB RAM
2.0 GB HDD

Live CD boots and runs just fine. However, I'm having a hell of a time getting the OS to install. The first time I tried to install, the installer locked the system up almost immediately, during the "Creating mount point (/media/cdrom)..." phase. I tried running it again in text mode, and got these error messages along with an identical lockup:

cmd 0x28 timed out
hdc: DMA interrupt recovery
hdc: lost interrupt

Based on this connection to interrupts, I tried booting the live CD with the "irqpoll" option. This allowed the installer to progress past the first stage. However, this time it locked up during the main installation process, giving the following error:

cp: read error: input/output error

I rebooted and tried running the installer again. This time, it began spitting out errors during the installation progress (including the same old cp: read error), but did not lock up and "successfully" completed the installation. A reboot yielded the GRUB screen; however, the operating system failed to boot and simply looped back to the POST screen. On subsequent installation attempts, the installation process proceeded in exactly the same way (completed but with errors). However, the OS now begins booting but errors out with this:

Error 13: Invalid or unsupported executable format

I've never had this much trouble installing a distro before. DSL, which I had loaded on this computer previously, installed the first time with no problems. Everything I can find on the "cp: read" error relates it to bad CD-ROMs, but I assume that if my live CD was corrupted, it would simply fail to boot.

So, I'm pretty well stumped. Any ideas?]]>

Desktop lockdown http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/2326/desktop-lockdown Tue, 28 Dec 2010 20:25:10 +0100 amazack 2326@/index.php?p=/discussions Messed up (?) /etc/firewall.conf in latest cooking http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/2323/messed-up-s-etcfirewall.conf-in-latest-cooking Tue, 28 Dec 2010 03:26:22 +0100 avamk 2323@/index.php?p=/discussions I am using latest SliTaz Cooking, and followed the documentation to customise the firewall.

When I first opened /etc/firewall.conf, I saw a long configuration file with entries like:

# Enable/disable kernel security at boot time.
KERNEL_SECURITY="yes"
# Enable/disable iptables rules.
IPTABLES_RULES="yes"

......

# Netfilter/iptables rules.
# This shell function is included in /etc/init.d/firewall.sh
# to start iptables rules.
#
iptables_rules()
{

......

I changed some setttings in the iptables_rules() function, saved /etc/firewall.conf, then did /etc/init.d/firewall restart.

However, it showed errors like (each line looks similar):

.....
/etc/init.d/firewall: /etc/firewall.conf: line 6: -A: not found
.....

I tried pscan localhost, and the open ports do not match my modifications to /etc/firewall.conf.

Then, I tried to open /etc/firewall.conf via the Server Manager GUI, and found that the entire contents have been *replaced* by just this:

# Generated by iptables-save v1.4.10 on Tue Dec 28 02:55:54 2010
*filter
:INPUT DROP [1765:165821]
:FORWARD DROP [0:0]
:OUTPUT DROP [36:1872]

-A INPUT -i eth0 -p icmp -j ACCEPT
-A OUTPUT -m state --state NEW,RELATED,ESTABLISHED -j ACCEPT
COMMIT

The iptables_rules() function is no longer present, also gone are the lines like "KERNEL_SECURITY="yes"".

It seems to me that my firewall configuration files have been corrupted somehow, is there a way for me to restore all of them to their factory defaults? Afterwards, how do I safely edit my firewall configuration?

Thanks.

tux@slitaz:~$ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
    GL_NV_conditional_render, GL_NV_depth_clamp, GL_NV_fragment_program,

glxgears reports 260.000 FPS

to change this, its necessary to change permission of /dev/dri to user:tux group:video - then the correct renderer is used

tux@slitaz:~$ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM GEM 20100330 DEVELOPMENT x86/MMX/SSE2

but glxgears is only:

tux@slitaz:~$ glxgears
Running synchronized to the vertical refresh. The framerate should be
approximately the same as the monitor refresh rate.
299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.670 FPS
300 frames in 5.0 seconds = 59.821 FPS

now how it should be (the new 2011-alfa from fluxflux):

monika@fluxflux: ~ $ glxinfo | grep render
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa DRI Intel(R) 965GM GEM 20100328 2010Q1 x86/MMX/SSE2
monika@fluxflux: ~ $ glxgears
1985 frames in 5.0 seconds = 396.521 FPS
2053 frames in 5.0 seconds = 410.139 FPS

can't see hard drive http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/2324/cant-see-hard-drive Tue, 28 Dec 2010 09:08:10 +0100 jonsul 2324@/index.php?p=/discussions Anyways, I decided to install it to my hard drive but fdisk -l isn't showing anything?? And gparted says no device found. It was an older 30gb drive so I tried to swap it out with an 80gb I had laying around. Same thing, nothing found.
Is there something I'm not getting?
Anyways any pointers would be nice since this is by far the nicest system I've yet to use on this computer.
Thanks]]>

[FIXED] recent cooking upgrade breaks sftp-server http://vanilla.slitaz.org/index.php?p=/discussion/2315/fixed-recent-cooking-upgrade-breaks-sftp-server- Mon, 27 Dec 2010 00:55:08 +0100 ultrarad 2315@/index.php?p=/discussions
sftp to the same account, however, goes through authentication, accepts the password, gives the "sftp>" prompt, and dies--via sshd dying.

(I note, though I don't think this should matter, that everything but the kernel was updated; it's 2.6.34 ... 2.6.36 doesn't quite work with all of my hardware last I tried. If this does somehow matter, then perhaps the issue is that sshd still works for ssh sessions.)

Are there any configs that might account for this? I had it working a few upgrades back, though those configs were removed along the way. I haven't found anything obvious to change.

stderr from:
/usr/sbin/sshd -ddd 2> /home/tux/sshdebuglog

attached.
